A MAN who sexually assaulted an Essex Police officer and spat at two others has been sentenced today and ordered to pay just £2,300 in compensation.

Essex Police Federation Chairman Steve Taylor (pictured above)has condemned the sentencing which he says is a missed opportunity for the courts to send strong signals that this behaviour is not acceptable.

He said: “Like every other member of society, officers do not expect to be sexually assaulted when trying to do their job.

“The justice system has missed an opportunity to send a strong signal to would-be sexual criminals that it is no way acceptable.

“What support do officers feel from a system that doesn’t send such offenders to prison?

“We can have all the legislation in the world aimed at protecting the protectors but what’s the point if the full weight of the courts are not felt by those intent on committing such disgusting crimes.”
