Harlow MP Robert Halfon “regrets voting Remain”

HARLOW MP Robert Halfon has revealed that he regrets voting Remain.
He made the comments on the James Whale Show on Talk Radio.
Mr Halfon, who had written articles defending the European Union before the 2016 referendum, now says that he “really regrets” voting Remain. The Harlow MP cited “democracy being betrayed” as the reason for his change of heart.
He said: “I voted Remain last time, very reluctantly but I was very worried.
“I was just not sure in many ways.
“But I really regret it because I’ve been disgusted at the way the establishment have behaved.
“And the way certain people in Parliament have behaved in doing everything possible to stop a democratic result.”
Mr Halfon continued: “One reason why I love our country is because I always thought we had the greatest Parliament in the world.
“I wanted to be an MP since the age of 10 in the greatest democracy in the world.
“We had a vote in 2016 and it’s not been respected.
“Believe me if there was a Leave vote now, I would be out there on the barricades.”
The MP added: “I’ve now come to the view that we’d probably be better off out but also predominantly because of democratic reasons.
“I just think that democracy has been betrayed and that millions of people who voted and respected the results.
“And all the Remainers at the time said they would respect the result have had their voting frustrate whether it’s by the Supreme Court or whether it’s a mechanism of Parliament and so on.”

The question is why does he regret it? Integrity is important today and I believe Mr. Halfon has failed that test badly. I think the local electorate will see through this charade of "regret" and vote elsewhere. I also suspect that he believes he will lose to Labour because having Mr. Johnson, Mr. Jedrick and Amber Rudd turn up within weeks shows how concerned he is.
Come on Mr. Halfon. The only reason you regret it is that you backed the wrong horse for what is now the current government and it's limiting your chances of getting a cabinet position again. I too voted remain, but do i regret it, absolutely not as i believed it to be the right thing. Also, i would now just like to see us leave because of the irreparable damage done and behaviour of both the UK govt and the EU. That's not a thing to regret, it's a change in situation. But then i guess when your paymasters are wanting it at all costs, and your constituents voted wildly in favour of leave you have to follow suit with an election looming. Have some integrity man and say what you really believe as i suspect it's somewhere along the lines of, i though leave was a bad idea but everybody around me wants it and it won't do my job prospects any harm so i'm getting on board. In contrast Gary i think he's trying to appeal more to the electorate who voted leave in high numbers here in Harlow, add in building a new hopsital and he's covering off the traditional Labour ground of health. Rather than thinking about winning the seat here i think Labour need to be more concerned about their traditional voters who voted leave in Harlow and where are they going to go as they have no idea what Labour stands for on this issue. I expect to see a bit of a surge in the Lib Dems to counter the Brexit Party on the other side which means things will probably just stay the same here in terms of representation but a more spread vote. But Labour will loose both avid remainers and leavers over this. I certainly don't see Labour winning the seat with some of the current policies and lack of clarity on the big issue of Brexit. Certainly some of the more centrist and moderate Labour voters are drifting away from the current popularist policy direction of the main party. Labour Harlow either need to distance themselves from it, or they'll get dragged down in the problems too locally, which i suspect may happen if momentum are believed to be the bigger power locally within Labour.
I have to disagree with your evaluation of Labour party policy jhumphreys84. And as we near an election Laura McAlpine will outline Labour's agenda on the way forward on this platform [hopefully] but also using social media. The idea that Momentum Harlow dictates policy to Harlow Labour is just so wide of the mark as to be wrong. I attend their meetings and quite clearly their valves are not "hard left" whatever that means but a group of people wanting to improve the town based on socialist valves like mine. Mr. Halfon enjoys the photo and handshaking but I suspect even he doesn't believe the policy agenda of Mr. Johnson let alone carry it out. He reminds me of Bill Rammell as he neared the end of his time as Harlow MP: tired and deflated.
"I’ve been disgusted at the way the establishment have behaved." So have I. Illegally proroguing parliament, using insulting and demeaning language, using the police for political propaganda, it's a long, long list. “And the way certain people in Parliament have behaved in doing everything possible to stop a democratic result.” Like closing down parliament at the most critical time for many years. That was a big attempt to stop the democratic process and hold the government to account. "I’ve now come to the view that we’d probably be better off out " And yet the government itself believes we will be worse off. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/nov/28/uk-significantly-worse-off-under-all-brexit-scenarios-official-forecast-gdp So why does Robert disagree with his own government? Or is he just spouting populist rhetoric? “We had a vote in 2016 and it’s not been respected." By the DUP, "Lounge Lizard" Rees Mogg and the ERG, and Prime Minister Clown who voted against the will of their own party. “And all the Remainers at the time said they would respect the result have had their voting frustrate whether it’s by the Supreme Court " I don't remember anyone saying that the only way to leave the EU would be to break the law? "or whether it’s a mechanism of Parliament and so on.” Isn't that called the democratic process? Holding the government to account? "No Deal" was never an option promoted during the 2016 referendum. “I just think that democracy has been betrayed" Well, Robert, as you are such a fan of democracy I'm sure that you will be voting for the confirmatory referendum, if or when such a motion is tabled. Then you will be able to correct your "mistake" and vote to leave. Or do you think that a deal with the EU negotiated by a Prime Minister who was voted in by 0.13% of the population is a good standard of "democracy"?
More confused and addled rubbish from the Lefties. Laura Mac / Mrs A......i , hasn't got a hope in the coming election because the local electorate can see straight through her pathetic efforts at an agenda. The simple truth is that she hasn't got one. Fancy Gary aligning integrity and Momentum ! kt quoting from the "Grauniad" , whatever next. Halfon changing his mind is piffle compared to Steptoe and his merry band of racists. I see that another couple of Socialist stalwarts have dumped Corbynski and his bunch of ......., I wonder why ?
When MickyB77 speaks he must be taking advice from his Tory mates: if he has any left! On his comment about Laura McAlpine, MickyB77 states: "the local electorate can see straight through her pathetic efforts at an agenda" But then he states: "The simple truth is that she hasn’t got one" Now I am as MickyB77 says only a socialist and or a Marxist but both statements can't be true, can they? And he then has the cheek to question my integrity, you really couldn't make it up unless of course you are Micky B77 the Tories friend but thankfully for them not their mouthpiece.
Gary, or is it really, confused.com ? Stick to basics, it's better for you in the long run. Saucy kt, where do you get your fairy stories from, because, your interpretation of recent events is pure Enid !
