That's more like it. Would be nice to think that she's stuck in the clink over Christmas.

Dear Scrooge. Jail for 5 weeks cost to the public purse around £13000. How about transporting to the penal colonies? Joke. Given the woman has problems as mention of the suspended sentence indicates, one is prompted to ask why haven't these problems been adequately addressed? £13000 might be better spent on other measures. Why should anyone have a need to steal food in the fifth? richest country in the world?

novoman, what planet are you on ? This lady has got a charge sheet a yard long, serial offender, thief and determined shop-lifter. £13.000, where did you get that from ? Retail crime in the U K costs, all in, around £700 k pa. I side with the judge, every time !

Didn't realise you had special access to someone's criminal records? Prisons are the University of crime and full. They not effective means of dealing with offenders and are a means of making matters worse whilst throwing money away. £13000 is on the low end of cost to you and me, ie the public purse. Reference published government figures for costs of keeping people in jail. See reoffending rates in Norway.

If you had read the story, novo, you would know that she is already on a suspended sentence, apparently for the same offences. A total waste of space.

Suspended sentence was recognised ok. Recommended reading for all commentators Norway's rehabilitation programme and reports from Her Majesty's Inspectors of Prisons. The economics of the "Lock em up" strategy doesn't work for the individual, the taxpayer or M&S QED.
