Tribute to Shelly Manne with Matt Skelton and Mark Crooks

Matt Skelton drums, Mark Crooks sax, James Davison trumpet, Leon Greening keyboards, Jeremy Brown bass.

Sheldon Manne (June 11, 1920 – September 26, 1984), professionally known as Shelly Manne, was an American jazz drummer. Most frequently associated with West Coast jazz, he was known for his versatility and also played in a number of other styles, including Dixieland, swing, bebop, avant-garde jazz and fusion, as well as contributing to the musical background of hundreds of Hollywood films and television programs.

Equally at home in modern and vintage Jazz styles Matt Skelton, a graduate of the RA of Music, enjoys a diverse musical career that encompasses Symphonic and Light Orchestral Music as well as smaller bands/trios. He has accompanied and recorded with, far too many leading internationally known Jazz figures to list here.

Mark graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music. He moved to London to study on the postgraduate jazz course at the Guildhall School of Music after winning the Young Jazz Player of the Year Competition in 1991. Mark has worked in a wide range of musical settings including classical work and shows but is perhaps most at home in the jazz world. He has played in all of London’s top jazz venues and at jazz festivals up and down the country both with his own and other bands and orchestras.

Since graduating with a MA in Jazz Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, James has become a regular lead trumpet deputy in many West End Shows. As well as a busy and varied freelance player he has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and as guest Principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra. James is also a member of several bands/orchestras, as well as his own band co-led with Callum Au.

Award winning jazz pianist Leon Greening has been the sideman of choice with the ‘who’s who’ of the UK Jazz Scene. Known as ‘everybody’s favourite pianist’ he is one of the finest pianists this country has ever produced and having done just about everything in the music world has become a mainstay of the London jazz scene whether playing for somebody else’s or his own band.

Jeremy Brown graduated from the Royal Academy of Music and has become one of the foremost bass players on the UK Jazz scene. Much in demand in the UK and Europe as a backing sideman he also performs as a regular member of many groups some of which he has toured abroad with. Jeremy is a founding member of the John Wilson Orchestra and whilst playing for other orchestras is currently a member of the BBC big band.
