Harlow Shoppers Help Advise How Retail Lockdown is Lifted

AS UK retail opened up further this week, shopping destinations have been working hard behind the scenes to get ready to welcome back their shoppers.

The Harvey Centre in Harlow has been at the forefront of this with shoppers in the area being one of a handful of national locations used to test public opinion about safety concerns in advance of the re-opening.

Harlow residents took part in a survey organised by The Harvey Centre’s marketing agency AL Marketing. Eight hundred shoppers participated in an online survey. This survey was supplemented by a further study reaching a 1,436 sample audience across the UK. This shopper survey has been interpreted in conjunction with the footfall analytics and insights provided by the team at Springboard.

The research reinforced the fact that shoppers need reassurance about the safety measures being put in place. Social distancing is a must, and how shopping centres manage queuing is a worry along with the availability of hand sanitisers. Clarity of messaging is also a key need.

Cleaning standards are a concern in the research and The Harvey Centre confirmed they have a strong cleaning regime in place along with hand sanitisers on the malls.

The research also highlighted that the aspects of shopping that people have missed most tends to be those with a social dimension – restaurants & cafes scored highest at 32%; fashion shopping at 21%; and entertainment at 16%.

Bryan Young, The Harvey Centre’s Centre Manager said, “We have a very loyal customer base and the research indicates that Harlow shoppers feel safer shopping locally. As we move into a new phase, we can’t wait to start welcoming more of our customers back. Things will feel different for a while, but we remain committed to making the centre as welcoming and safe as possible. We can’t wait to see you.”

Another great example how all parts of the town centre are working together to ensure shoppers are safe. This weekend made be a challenge around social distancing. Please be tolerant and kind to all the hardworking staff including council staff who are there to support you. If you can give them a smile. Be kind to yourself and others social distancing still matters.
