Halfon writes to Chancellor about financial support for Harlow’s businesses to protect Harlow jobs

AS the news broke that Harlow was moving into Tier 2 Coronavirus restrictions, Harlow’s MP, Robert Halfon, wrote to the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, asking for the Treasury to monitor the “situation on the ground very closely to ensure that any businesses or other organisations are not financially impacted”.

In his letter, Mr Halfon explained that “it is very important that, because these decisions have been made by the Government, businesses and jobs in my constituency of Harlow are protected.”

He called upon the Chancellor to do “everything possible, given the financial constraints you are under, to support those on low incomes, particularly on the National Minimum and Living Wages.”

Mr Halfon also acknowledged “the significant amount of support that the Government has given to Harlow, including a financial package worth £130+ million to support our businesses, charities, community groups, sports and cultural societies” and welcomed the furlough scheme which has protected 16,000 Harlow jobs to date.

This letter was followed by another from a number of Essex MPs, including Mr Halfon, to the Prime Minister about further financial support to protect jobs and businesses in Essex.

Commenting, Mr Halfon said: “I know how difficult this is for everyone in our community and I deeply sympathise with those businesses and residents who are facing financial difficulties. I will do everything I can to support you. I have asked for further financial support and I will continue to lobby every single day for this.

“If any business is facing difficulties, I would encourage them to call the Government’s Business Support Helpline on 0300 456 3565. The advisers will be able to offer detailed guidance on what measures of financial support are available and how to access them.”
