Stansted Airport defend increasing express drop off price to £7.00

Business / Fri 30th Oct 2020 at 02:13pm

BOSSES at Stansted Airport have defended their plans to increase the express drop off fare from £5.00 to £7.00

The increase will start form Monday November 2nd.

A London Stansted Airport spokesperson said:

“The coronavirus pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on aviation, with passenger volumes since March around 90% lower than they were in 2019. Demand is unlikely to return to pre-Covid levels for some time.

Like any business faced with such challenges, it has been necessary to look realistically at how we can plan our recovery from the biggest crisis ever faced by our industry.

This includes reviewing income from car parking, retail and other products and services, which is key to remaining as competitive as possible as we work to re-introduce routes and keep flight prices as low as possible for customers.

Doing so will enable us to deliver the best recovery for London Stansted, protecting as many jobs as possible and supporting the revival of the regional economy.

Like the vast majority of airports, we charge for access to our terminal forecourts as part of our long-term commitment to reducing the number of “kiss and fly” car journeys.

That commitment remains unchanged and we continue to offer a wide range of options for travel to and from the airport.

London Stansted has a proud track record of public transport use by passengers with more than half arriving by train, coach or bus, the highest proportion of any major UK airport.

Passengers will continue to have access to a free drop-off facility within the blue zone of the short stay car park, from where they can access the terminal via a short walk without incurring any charges.

“We would also remind all residents living within a 10 mile radius of the Airport that a generous discount scheme is in place for those using the Express Set Down facility.”

You can increase your parking charges if you want but drop off and pick should be fee for 10 minutes.

This is just ripping the air traveler off and you know it.

Stansted is consistently voted as the World's second worst airport because of rip-off behaviour such as this. A ridiculous argument by MAG to defend the indefensible........bankruptcy would be too good for them!

You are doing nothing more than deterring the use of the facility and pricing yourselves out of the drop off. Reduce the cost to increase turnover.

Just dropped my daughter at express drop off. Disgusting price hike, but that’s not my main complaint. Tried to pay by card, placed card in machine and entered pin, as contactless not working. Told to press accept, but no indication of where button situated. Tried twice before retrieving card. I had exactly £7.00 in coin which I placed in tray And waited for machine to count, stopped at £1.55 outstanding then after about 20 seconds continued until it showed 5 p owing. No coins left in tray. After several minutes and not wishing to be “ robbed “ , paying £25 ( after 15 min ), due to severe delay due to inept machinery, I moved to another machine and used card on contactless point. The express drop off cost me £14. You’re bloody robbers, at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask. Service the machines so they work correctly and instructions better relayed to the user. Finally stop blaming COVID.

If MAG are keen to reduce travel to Stansted by car why have new multi storey car parks been recently built? Greenwash being used (again) to disguise the monopoly situation enjoyed which allows scandalous drop off fees to be levied. This has nothing to do with the environment ( why not reduce the incentive to fly were this the case?) but everything to do with maximising the monopoly enjoyed at the expense and convenience of the customer. Hypocrisy and greed.

Hit them where it hurts, DON'T use any airports that charge to drop off. Would any sane person pay a supermarket or a service station for the privilege of using their shop? I don't think so.....& the over all objective behind the charge is NO different. Btw, when MAG took over Stansted back in 2013, the spokesperson on the day gave assurances that the drop off charge (having only just been introduced 9 Nov 2012,) would be re-assessed - due to the uproar it had caused. Needless to say, such was the result, it was not only kept but steadily increases because although complaining, people continue to pay to use the drop off & so of course the fees will remain.

They say: we charge for access to our terminal forecourts as part of our long-term commitment to reducing the number of “kiss and fly” car journeys. That`s rubbish. How do they think people are going to drop off friends/relatives with luggage when no public transport is available from the point of departure? A 5 minute free drop off is long enough for most people: we`ve already said our"good by", and as a Public Relations excercise it would pay in the long run. It`s just greed and really pisses people off. But, we all know they won`t even read these comments let alone take any notice.

Just had the privilege of paying £7.00 to drop off family for fifteen minutes at Stansted Airport. If I'd stayed longer it rises to £25.00. How is this what amounts to (in my book) a criminal racket not made illegal? Apart from anything else, the contactless screen was tiny and unreadable because it was covered with dried up and deteriorated plastic. I couldn't tell what was going on. In the end I entered my pin, but even then the buttons seemed stuck with no sense of response to them. The barrier opened, but I'm left wondering why one has to pay anything to drive up to and airport and drop someone off for a few minutes? I'm sure many visitors to this what is rapidly becoming a rotten country can't believe that we wear this. The comment above notes that 'they' won't read these comments. The thing to do is write a typed signed letter (not an email) directly to Stansted Managing Director Steve Griffiths, copying in your MP and a number of other interested parties - the British Aviation Authority for instance, who own Stansted, though good luck with trying to work out who the CEO is, and an address for them.

Cannot believe the shear rudeness of charging to drop a love one of to go and enjoy a holiday especially after a 2 year pandemic. If the que is long then it’s 25 pounds. That’s more expensive than some flights ! The reason is so shallow and basically just a way of ripping the public off. Stansted is a budget flight hub. I drove over 70 miles which cost me less than the drop off fee. Now that cannot be right. Have some decency and drop the cost and make it longer than 15 mins. Thanks

Absolutely shambolic from MAG. Pathetic excuse, riding the Coronavirus gravy-train to justify ripping people off! The government should really be stepping in, it paints an awful picture of Britain (though, let's be honest, Britain is a huge rip-off these days, so perhaps MAG are trying to lead the way).
