Work to deliver new M11 junction “on track” say council

WORK to deliver a vital new M11 Junction in Harlow is on track, with the transformational improvements due to open to the public in 2022.

Critical in helping to reduce congestion and boost the local economy, junction 7a is the largest new road-improvement project in the county for a number of years.

Work began in the summer and, through the implementation of Covid-19 measures to allow the site team to work safely, has been able to continue on schedule.

Cllr Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader of Essex County Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, said: “Over the last few months we have taken a pragmatic approach, working closely with our contractor GRAHAM to enable works to continue, while monitoring and reviewing the necessary measures in line with Government guidance.

“This has allowed work to progress quickly both on Gilden Way and on the off-line section with earthworks and piling now underway to enable the creation of the junction itself.”

Once completed, the junction will connect to a widened Gilden Way via a new link road, ultimately creating a new east-west link through the town, helping reduce congestion, boost the economy and providing creating new public transport opportunities.

Cllr Bentley added: “Harlow is one of the economic successes of the county, but we recognise that the lack of a second motorway access is a major barrier, which is why 7a is so important.

“Making it easier for motorists to use roads designed for heavier traffic will ease congestion on more local roads. This, in turn, can help improve air quality in the town and make it safer for those walking and cycling – creating the safer, greener, healthier environments we want to see within our urban areas.”
