Further statement by Harlow MP Robert Halfon on Tier 3 arrangement

UNFORTUNATELY, on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer, the Health Secretary has announced that Harlow and many districts in Harlow will be moving into Tier 3 from 00:01 on Wednesday. The significant pressures on the local NHS, rising hospital admissions and the increasing rates of infection – including in London and other areas of South and West Essex – have led to this decision.

I met with the Health Secretary to discuss this and also asked him in the House of Commons: “I have supported the measures and placed my faith in government and scientific officers. My real worry is that local hospitality businesses are really struggling. They are on their knees. How will further restrictions curb the disease given that cases increased in Harlow during the second national lockdown?

“I understand the virus recently stabilised in Harlow. There has been no rates of increase in the over-60’s for the last week. Further to this, the overall increase in cases is 12% in Harlow against a regional average of 40%. So I ask my Rt Hon friend to consider keeping Harlow in Tier 2.”

The Health Secretary responded: “Unfortunately, cases are rising in Harlow and districts of Essex. We do have to take action. Let us work together to get this down. Let’s work together to get this done and get Harlow back in Tier 2.”

The full guidance for Tier 3 is set out here. I deeply sympathise with every business who will now have to close or change how they operate because of these restrictions.

I have so far managed to secure a financial package worth well over £160 million for our town and I will continue to do everything possible to ensure that every business has the support they need to get through this.

I would strongly advise all local businesses to visit gov.uk/coronavirus to see what measures of support they may be eligible for. Alternatively businesses can call the Government’s Business Support helpline on 0800 998 1098 for further guidance.

The second wave of this virus is hitting countries across Europe – in countries like Sweden, where nearly all the intensive care beds in Stockholm are currently in use; Germany, where a national lockdown has been announced and in the Netherlands, who today have announced further measures.

This is such a tough time for our community, but we must follow the rules and remember Hands, Face, Space so that we can get this virus back under control as the vaccine is rolled out.
