Harlow Sculpture Town reflects back on 2020

AN END OF YEAR MESSAGE FROM HARLOW SCULPTURE TOWN

THERE is so much to say about 2020, but here we would just like a few moments of your time to reflect with us on our proudest achievements of the year, and look forward to what is shaping up to be a very exciting 2021.

We started the year with a bang, seeing a record number of entries to the Harlow Open 20×20 exhibition, proving (not that we needed to), the cultural diversity and enthusiasm of our community. In March we re-branded as Harlow Sculpture Town, before launching our new website and digital map. The map truly came into it’s own during lockdown, as a way to experience culture in a safe, socially distanced way, and the accompanying press coverage amplified what fans of Harlow’s amazing collection have always known, that experiencing art in the great outdoors can contribute to your mental well-being.

Our small team and our Sculpture Town Artist In Residence, Meriel Clarke, responded to the rapidly changing restrictions with a young artist’s lockdown challenge and a programme of events that allowed participants to engage with art in a Covid secure way. We asked for feedback, and were told “People like me need to escape isolation, please organise more!”

The last few months have seen exciting leaps forward in the development of a new Friends of Harlow Sculpture Town membership scheme, offering a wider and more varied programme of member benefits and events. Crucially, it will help to secure the long-term sustainability of Harlow Sculpture Town. We are currently working with the existing membership of the Friends to shape the future of the scheme, and will update you in 2021.

Don’t forget that most of the Harlow Sculpture Town collection is outdoors in public spaces, ready for you to enjoy. For many of you it is accessible even in Tier 4. We’ve loved seeing so many of you enjoy it via #harlowsculpturetown on Instagram.

If you’d like to spread the word about us along with some festive cheer, forward this email to a friend, and let them know they can sign up to our newsletter here!

Thank you, as always, for your support. We can’t wait to see you in 2021.
