Letter to Editor: Questions over plans for new hospital

News / Sat 23rd Jan 2021 at 10:17am

Sir,

A PITY that the online meeting wasn’t flagged up well beforehand and more prominently.

To the observer reading the report it seemed to raise some curious issues that seem rather cranky. Where did the farm come from? Was there a local rally of residents and farmers demanding new farmland?

1. Do we really need a farm on the roof? What additional costs might their be to ensure the structure can support and drain such an addition? Hospitals are high energy consumers. Might solar panels be a better option?

2. The population is very likely to grow especially as more people are moving out of London and there’s every chance that Harlow will get a public transport rail or metro link South to London via Epping central line and North to Stansted airport. So why build a hospital with less beds than we currently have?

Reducing beds hardly seems to be future proofing a project with at least 50 years life.

3. Building a farm on the roof would most likely scupper the opportunity to expand the hospital upwards, which should extra beds and expansion be needed would be a good option. It would with park and ride see 4., make more sense to build retail space, rents from said would off set the cost of building and running the site

.4 Good Regional and local access to the hospital would need to be a priority so building it at junction 7a) with a multi storey park and ride would seem to make more sense.

If the town gets a ring road there would be other  options but as things are 7a) would be a good option.

Confused. Can those who are proposing this publish a response to Your Harlow please.

Kind regards

Confused
