Dozens of supporters are stepping up for St Clare Hospice

DOZENS of supporters are preparing to ‘Step Up for St Clare’ as part of a month-long sponsored step challenge taking place to raise funds for the West Essex and East Hertfordshire charity, St Clare Hospice.

The challenge asks participants to walk 10,000 steps every day, for the whole month of June, the same number of steps as a St Clare Hospice nurse walks on an average shift. Challengers will be collecting sponsorship for their 300,000 total step challenge, which they can complete individually or as part of a team.

The sponsored challenge is raising funds to support the Hospice’s recently launched campaign ‘Nurses Are Needed’ to fund the expansion of their nursing teams. The campaign is part of a vital long-term plan by the Hastingwood-based charity to fund new roles in their Inpatient Unit, Hospice at Home and Community Palliative Care teams to meet the increased need in their local area for specialist nursing care for people with complex life-limiting illnesses.

Amongst the teams signed up to ‘Step Up for St Clare’ is the Hospice’s own Senior Leadership Team, led by the Chief Executive, Sarah Thompson. Commenting on their forthcoming challenge, Sarah said:

“We talked about the challenge and worked out that between the six of us we could walk 1,800,000 steps in a month and raise funds to pay for the additional nurses our Hospice needs. We agreed we’d have a go and each walk 10,000 steps every day in June – just like our nurses do each day. We know just how much our nurses are needed by our local community, and we want to respond to that need so that every person who dies in our community has the best possible death, pain free, and in the place they wish.”

Sarah continued, “It will certainly be a challenge getting in 10,000 steps every single day. Between working more than eight hours at a desk, and looking after my family, I will need to be up early and out late each day to reach my step count! But that challenge is nothing compared to the daily experiences of local people facing life-limiting illnesses. That is what this is all about. Making a difference to the lives of local people who need our support.”

Leading the ‘Step Up for St Clare’ challenge is St Clare Hospice’s Challenges and Events Fundraiser, Dani De’ath, who said: “We’re inviting people across our local area to Step Up this June and take on our sponsored step challenge to raise funds to put more nurses in people’s homes and your local Hospice. You can do the challenge alone or with a team, supporting each other to reach your goal. Whether you decide to walk, jump, skip, hop or run your steps is completely up to you!”

‘Step Up for St Clare’ is free to enter, and individuals will receive a St Clare t-shirt. Participants are just asked to commit to fundraise as much as possible through sponsorship – by setting up an online fundraising page or collecting sponsorship offline.
