ST Clare Hospice’s team of bereavement volunteers have been recognised for their vital contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic by being awarded the ‘Volunteer Team of the Year’ award at the annual Epping Forest District Council Civic Awards 2021.
The Volunteer Team of the Year award recognised those who had made a significant contribution to the welfare of others during the COVID-19 pandemic, and those who had done the extra mile to offer support to their community.
The team of 38 bereavement volunteers were first trained to support the delivery of seven Bereavement Cafés across West Essex and East Herts – café-style events that bring together local people who are experiencing grief and loss to support one another. When COVID Lockdown restrictions meant the face-to-face cafés could no longer take place, the volunteers adapted and continued to support those who are bereaved through online communities, virtual bereavement café events, and the formation of a brand-new Bereavement Helpline.
St Clare Patient and Family Support team Manager, Sushma Dhami, oversees the bereavement volunteer team and said: “Throughout the past year, as we have navigated the pandemic, our bereavement volunteers have been willing and dedicated, finding time to support people in the local community and help the Hospice to develop new services. The Hospice’s bereavement services have never been more needed due to COVID, and they are underpinned by our tremendous team of volunteers who definitely deserve to have their dedication recognised.”
Commenting on the bereavement volunteers’ ‘Volunteer Team of the Year’ win, Sushma said: “This is really fantastic news and a testament to the continued hard work and commitment of all our bereavement service volunteers. A really well-deserved award which recognises the difference our volunteers make within our community.”
