Stewards Academy medal at Quadcopter Challenge

Education: Secondary / Tue 15th Jun 2021 at 08:14am

STEWARDS Academy are delighted to announce that our amazing Year 9 Team won Bronze at the Raytheon Quadcopter Challenge Regional Final.  The challenge was to design a quadcopter drone that would be capable of flight on Mars, with the aim to aid future space exploration.

The team was set a strict budget and had to consider the unique flying conditions they would face on the red planet. The Stewards team, named “The Dronuts”, designed a lightweight drone capable of surveillance for reconnaissance missions.

10 teams from schools across the county competed for a winning place in the national final by presenting their designs virtually in front of a panel of aerospace industry experts. Our team wowed the judges with their creativity, presenting skills and articulate responses during the Q&A.

Mr Perrin (Assistant Headteacher said): “It was a close call, with only a few points difference between the top 3 schools. We are very proud of Stewards Academy’s performance against such tough opposition. Huge congratulations are in order for Edward Austin (9EW), Jessica Bishop (9EW), Ruby Halsey (9SMR), Rabia Hamid (9SMR), Andrej Sedliak (9UM) and Francesca Walker (9EW). Thanks too to Mr Rew for the time and commitment he has given to this project and to Miss White for her support with this project.”
