AUTHOR Chris Penhall’s feel-good novels are based on her own experiences living in Portugal, and are guaranteed to bring sun and fun into your life whatever the weather …
If you’re yearning to be transported to a Portuguese paradise this year, but don’t fancy the complications of traffic light systems, hotel quarantines and airport queues, the new paperbacks by Chris Penhall could be right up your street!
Chris will celebrate a double publication day later this month, when her romantic comedy books The House That Alice Built and New Beginnings at the Little House in the Sun will be released in paperback by Ruby Fiction, an imprint of award-winning publisher Choc Lit.
Both books are part of the author’s successful ‘Portuguese Paradise’ series set in the beautiful coastal town of Cascais in Portugal.Whilst Chelmsford-based Chris throws herself enthusiastically into local Essex life, having worked for both BBC Radio Essex and Essex Life Magazine, she readily admits that part of her heart belongs to her own Portuguese paradise:
‘I lived in Cascais in Portugal a long time ago, and for me it was a magical time. I fell in love with the country, and the colours, sounds, atmosphere and beauty of my surroundings are what inspired me to write The House That Alice Built and New Beginnings at the Little House in the Sun many years later.’
After writing her first book, it took Chris a further eight years to realise her childhood dream of becoming a published author. She first celebrated fiction writing success when The House That Alice Built was the winner of Choc Lit’s ‘Search for a Star’ competition sponsored by Your Cat magazine. She says that her experience taught her a lesson that ‘you should follow your dreams and enjoy it every step of the way’ – a belief that is definitely reflected in her novels and the hilariously relatable character of Alice Mathews.
Alice has spent her life being the ‘sensible one’, with most of her time dedicated to renovating her London town house – but then her long-term relationship ends and a postcard from Buenos Aires turns her ordered, organised existence upside down. One very unsensible decision later, and Alice finds herself in Cascais, Portugal, and so begins her lesson in ‘going with the flow’; a lesson that sees her cat-sitting, paddle boarding, dancing on top of bars and rediscovering her artistic talents. Both ‘Portuguese Paradise’ books follow Alice through the ups and downs of her new start in Cascais, and there’s plenty of fun to be had along the way as she experiences love, life and pasteis de nata!
Chris is hopeful that readers will feel they are ‘travelling to Portugal with her as they turn the pages’, and she has definitely ensured this with her gorgeous descriptions of the Portuguese coast, which are bound to charm book lovers and sun worshippers alike.
The House That Alice Built and New Beginnings at the Little House in the Sun are both out on 29 June 2021.
They will be available to order from all good bookstores and online retailers. The House That Alice Built is the first book in the ‘Portuguese Paradise’ series, but the stories can be read in any order.
Chris’s third book, Finding Summer Happiness, is also available as an eBook, audiobook and Amazon print book.
