New start-up programme launched to help Harlow’s aspiring young entrepreneurs

A pioneering new programme is set to launch in Harlow to help the town’s young people recover from the economic damage of the Covid-19 pandemic by starting their own business.

The Young Entrepreneurs Programme will assist ten 18-to-25-year-olds in Harlow to set up their own business in just 6-weeks over July and August by providing free business training and grants.

Participants will benefit from a fully funded package of business skills training, one-to-one business advice, small grants to invest in their business and a dedicated office suite to work from. With hands-on guidance from experienced business professionals to help them, the project aims to allow participants to turn an idea into a fully formed business over the course of the 6-week programme.

With the brunt of job losses during the past 18 months falling on the under-30s, the new programme is aiming to give Harlow’s young people the opportunity to pursue running their own business as an alternative to employment.

The programme is a run by local enterprise agency, Nwes, and will be delivered from the Harlow Enterprise Hub on Edinburgh Way in July and August this year. Funded through the proceeds of the Harlow Enterprise Hub’s joint enterprise fund, residents within the Harlow Council area will be able to participate free of charge.

Chris Chapman, Business Advisor at Nwes, who is managing the project said “Unfortunately young people have been badly affected by the pandemic, with many finding job opportunities cut off for them. Starting your own business is a great alternative to employment, which allows people to learn new skills and boost self-esteem as well as earning an income. Often young people are put off as they don’t have the confidence or know where to start, this programme is aiming to change that. By providing hands on support and advice every step of the way, the programme will allow participants to develop a fully formed business in just 6 weeks. We are hoping to launch a new generation of talented, young businesspeople in Harlow.”

The programme is due to launch on the 26th July and applications to participate are now open. Anyone interested in taking part is encouraged to email [email protected] to express their interest or visit www.nwes.org.uk/events/yeprogramme for more information.
