HARLOW AC has benefited from two donations that will help members of the club: Toyota UK have provided a specific grant of £5000 to maintain and to buy race chairs for budding wheelchair athletes and the NEU has provided £500 to help with families in hardship continue with athletics.
ParasportUK is dedicated to advancing disability sport and is supported by Toyota UK, lead sponsor to the British Paralympic Team. Harlow AC is delighted to be one of the 86 projects that ParasportUK will be helping this year.
In addition to being an elite level performer, Richard Chiassaro is a dedicated coach to a growing number of wheelchair athletes and put together a bid for funds to ensure that there are enough chairs for all. Alexander Jones, chief investment officer for ParasportUK, said in response to the bid, “I really liked the project and am delighted that we will be supporting so many new members.”
The club also applied to the West Essex branch of the National Education Union (NEU), having learnt that they were making funds available to good causes in the region. The specific reason was to seek funds for families in hardship due to the pandemic. The money will be made available to those experiencing difficulty in paying membership fees, or who need help with equipment such as track shoes.
Mr Murray Sackwild, Chair of the West Essex NEU, said, “One of the unexpected side-effects of Covid 19 and lockdown has been National Education Union Districts finding themselves with surplus funds for the year. A vote of members at West Essex District NEU agreed to donate to local organisations where young people could benefit. One of these organisations was Harlow Athletics Club – a fabulous club which makes a real difference to young people in the community. We were absolutely delighted to be able to make this contribution.”
In response to both donations, club Chair Steve Lott, said, “Corporations and Unions often only get talked about negatively and their work for communities goes unnoticed. We cannot thank Parasport UK and Toyota, or the NEU enough. These two gifts will make an enormous difference to a small club such as ours and its members.”
