Long queues outside petrol stations across Harlow

News / Fri 24th Sep 2021 at 12:19pm

THERE were traffic woes all across Harlow on Friday as people queued up to get petrol.

YourHarlow travelled across town and saw queues at both garages on the A414, Tescos at Church Langley, Bush Fair, BP at Southern Way, Elizabeth Way, Kitson Way and Sainsburys.

As a possible consequence there were long traffic queues on main routes at First Avenue, Howard Way and the A414 towards Gates roundabout.

======================

People should carry on buying petrol as normal, despite supply problems that have closed some stations, the government has said reports the BBC.

A “handful” of BP stations, and a small number of Esso-owned Tesco Alliance stations, were closed on Thursday because of a lack of delivery drivers.

But Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said refineries had “plenty of petrol”.

He told the BBC that the government could bring in the army to drive fuel tankers if it would help.

It is estimated that the UK is short of about 100,000 HGV drivers – with gaps made worse by the pandemic and Brexit.

Reports in several newspapers have suggested that the government is considering getting soldiers to drive fuel tankers under emergency plans.

When questioned about this on BBC Breakfast, Mr Shapps said: “If it can actually help, we will bring them in.”

However, he said there would be “technicalities” as to whether military personnel could switch to driving civilian vehicles.

The AA said that most of the UK’s forecourts were working as they should.

“There is no shortage of fuel and thousands of forecourts are operating normally with just a few suffering temporary supply chain problems,” said AA president Edmund King.

“Fridays and the weekend always tend to be busier on forecourts, as drivers either combine filling up with shopping runs, prepare for weekend trips or refuel for the start of the new working week.”

Mr King said drivers should not fill up outside their normal routines, because even if the occasional petrol station was temporarily closed, others just down the road would be open.

“It is now clear that there have been occasional delays over recent weeks that have been managed with hardly anyone noticing. This was a manageable problem.”

There are about 8,380 petrol stations in the UK, according to the Petrol Retailers Association. Of these, about 1% are believed to be closed at the moment.

It is understood that about 50 to 100 BP forecourts are affected by shortages, while Esso said “a small number” of its Tesco Alliance retail sites had been hit.

What are people doing??? Apart from holding up traffic and using the petrol they do have, oh and also ensuring that those who really do need petrol can't get any. Let's hope there's not a loo roll shortage as well,

By panic buying, these idiots are ensuring that there will be a shortage. Just get fuel as normal and stop being selfish.

My wife has just come home from work (Tesco, Church Langley). Good luck to anyone who simply wants to do their shopping. Queue for the petrol station has blocked all access to the store. Twatsville at it's best !!

"No need to panic buy" they said. That would explain why all over Harlow traffic is being blocked by the fools queuing at gas stations. Human behaviour never ceases to fascinate me... And while we're on the subject of fuel shortages, empty shelves and turkeyless Christmases... Brexit is really working out well, isn't it? So glad we 'took back control'. Jeez... #Brexit #BrexitReality #RejoinEU #fuelshortages #panicbuying

There is a global shortage of lorry drivers, so it's incorrect to blame Brexit.

Well as soon as the News says, "No need to panic buy" that is an immediate green flag to everyone to do just that. Why don't they just keep their traps shut, and everyone would have continued as normal. !

Grant Shapps said today said refineries had "plenty of petrol". Trust in this governmment is so high that Grant Shapps had to suddenly cancel a constituency event after huge fuel queues filled the car park of a supermarket he was due to speak at. https://www.whtimes.co.uk/news/grant-shapps-cancels-constituency-event-8362826 This 'Brexit' thing is going really well. No fuel, no food, empty shelves, no border controls, no trade deals. If only someone had warned this might happen. There is no world wide shortage of lorry drivers. There is evidence of HGV driver shortages across Europe, but the UK has been among the hardest hit by the problem thanks to Brexit. The additional border bureaucracy after Brexit means it is too much hassle for many of them to drive into and out of the UK. Many drivers are paid by the mile or kilometre rather than by the hour, so delays cost them money. Also the pound lost value after Brexit so EU drivers are paid less. Brexit may not be the sole cause, the incompetence of this government is certainly a factor, but Brexit is in no way helping things. It is actively hindering, and preventing solutions that would otherwise be avilable.

Idiots, there was no issue until the media led by the left wing BBC and other newspapers created a panic in their lies over a so called shortage. Their continued attempts to bring down this government is ridiculous. These sad remainders are pathetic in their childish sulks as they cannot accept Brexit is here to stay. . There were 6 out of 1800 petrol stations temporarily closed, now there are issues nationwide, engineered by their foolishness. The Independent press standards organisation need to take action to stop their lies.

There has been a shortage of hgv drivers for 10-15 years, brexit and pandemic have just made it worse, average age of a driver is 55 and uk companies have had the luxury of cheap eu labour for many years and now its bitten them in the backside.

Hope all those filling up unnecessarily still have plenty of rice and toilet paper left from last year's panic as you're depriving the people who sell it to you of petrol we need to get to work most are on lower pay so don't have a full take of fuel all the time.if most of you queuing at 4 in the morning had two brain cells you would be confused have fun when the wholesale and retail food workers cannot get to work.

Garages should charge £30 before you get to the pumps with no change given, not only will it stop the "tank toppers" it will make the supplies go further until supplies are back to normal.

I'm a courier driver, I can't find fuel and had to turn down work yesterday. Why are people so short sighted and only think of themselves. What about the carers who can't afford to have a full tank of fuel as they are on minimum wages most of the time and live on a tight budget. When your loved one can't be cared for because you filled up needlessly. When you can't go on that long awaited holiday because I can't deliver the airplane spares to airports around the country. Have a good day at home with a vehicle with a full tank of fuel sitting outside while the people who would be working today are frustrated by not being able to work and care for others.

Mazz, there isn't a worldwide shortage of drivers, it's just here in the UK. We lost hundreds due to Brexit. Those who voted leave in order to get rid of foreigners, well, there you go, worked out well didn't it?

Edward Huxtable

Ken . Brexit may have caused foreign hgv drivers to go home , a mistake that needs fixing , but we also got rid of the foreign benefit scroungers that just come to the uk to get free money to send back to their families , then go into the woods to get drunk.
