HARLOW College officially opened its new town centre Salon to the general public with a ribbon cutting ceremony performed by local MP Robert Halfon. The Salon is situated on East Gate in the former Citizens Advice Bureau building.
Robert, along with members of the public, was given a guided tour of the Salon, which included hairdressing and massage demonstrations and treatments including a relaxing hand and arm massage.
The Salon, which will offer hair, barbering and beauty treatments at affordable prices, is spread over three floors, with ground floor and first floor hair studios and beauty treatment rooms on the 2nd floor.
As well as offering treatments to the general public, the space will also be used as a teaching and learning environment for students on vocational courses. The new Salon complements the existing Salon which is situated on the main college campus, which also offers commercial treatments.
Speaking at the grand opening, members of the public had some very positive things to say about the new Salon: “It’s been really fantastic today. The students who showed us round really knew their stuff – it sounds like it’s going to be a really exciting time ahead for the students at Harlow College.”
“The space here is beautiful. I will definitely be booking a treatment, especially a manicure and pedicure, but all the treatments you offer here are very appealing.”
“The Salon is very fresh and welcoming. I had an arm and hand massage which I’ve never had before and it was lovely. The students were very efficient and informative and came across as extremely mature.”
Julia and Sissiana, both local residents, said of their experience: “Really impressed with the facilities, it had a really nice atmosphere and all the staff and students seem really friendly. It feels calm and professional and I will definitely be booking a treatment here – facials, massage and eyebrows sound particularly appealing.”
Karen Spencer, Principal of Harlow College, said: “It was a pleasure to see the new Salon opened yesterday. It’s a great facility for preparing our students for the world of work. They get real, practical experience of working with clients in a commercial environment. I’d also like to thank Harlow Council for supporting the College with this project. ”

Your Harlow spoke to Assistant Academy Manager for Hair and Beauty Therapy, Helen Harmer
This reminds me how when I was trainee journalist at Harlow Tech, back in 1969, we would be invited to a slap-up meal by the student chefs, waiters and waitresses. They were demonstrating their cooking, presentation and table-waiting skills, whilst we were required to write a review of the culinary experience. Amazing meals and service every time. Who said there's no such thing as a free lunch? Well, there was then! Today, we'd be taxed on it, I guess.
Will this salon accommodate Afro Caribbean hair types or strictly only European??
Why have they moved next to an existing hair and beauty training academy? BIC -They could of rented any space in the town - it’s not like there isn’t plenty of empty units.
