Harlow’s Conservative Council will deliver pledge to reduce Harlow Council Tax reaffirms council’s finance boss

News / Wed 12th Jan 2022 am31 08:51am

THE HARLOW Conservatives are continuing to pledge to reduce their share of the overall council tax bill for Harlow residents.

This may be a bit of a hard sell as the Tory-run Essex County Council part of the bill is set to rise and the police and fire bill is set to rise (set by the Tory Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Roger Hirst).

Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Cllr James Leppard said: “For the last decade, the Labour administration in the town hall hiked your Council Tax year on year.

That pattern has ended and Harlow’s Conservative Council will reduce the Council Tax you pay to Harlow Council.

“And to be clear, we will reduce Council Tax whilst investing in every one of the Council’s services that you love and delivering on your priorities.

“This is only possible because we are sorting out the Council’s finances, not taking your money for granted and running a financially prudent Council.”

Meanwhile Conservative County Councillors Johnson, Hardware, Souter and Garnett (who also happen to be Harlow District Councillors) have supported a 5% rise in the Essex County Council element of the Council Tax . Which incidentally will be collected by Conservative controlled Harlow District Council who have to send out the bills.

"THE HARLOW Conservatives are continuing to pledge to reduce their share of the overall council tax bill for Harlow residents." No, the pledge was to reduce the council tax bill for Harlow residents. The whole bill. Not just "their share", the whole bill. Immediately. Not after a year, but immediately. They have failed. They have failed to keep their pledge. They have failed all who voted for them.

Let's just remind all those left wing Labour supporters, which party was it, that increased the council tax 8 times in 9 years of being the administration party of Harlow, yes that right, it was the left wing Labour party and to increase it last year was proof that they do not care about or even put the Harlow residents first because as we all know, last year was a tough time for all the Harlow residents, financially due to the covid 19 pandemic.

Unpopular but taxes can be good, ( they pay for what we all generally need), especially if those with the widest shoulders bare the greatest load, however, to raise council tax with one tory hand and trumpet a tory cut on the other is sheer hypocrisy. We may differentiate between National, county and district taxes but their all taxes and the balance is determined mainly by central government..all of which as far as Harlow is concerned, happen to be Tory. Even when Harlow was under Labour the Council expenditure was shaped by Tory Tory Essex and Tory Westminster. QED
