Disgraced Met police officer avoids jail after hiding husband’s ‘drug money’ during police raid at home in Harlow

Crime / Tue 1st Feb 2022 at 09:01am

A FEMALE Metropolitan Police officer who hid a shoebox filled with thousands of pounds in drug cash for her corrupt cop husband during a raid on their house in Harlow has been spared jail.

Kashif Mahmood, 32, was jailed for eight years in May for his role in helping an organised crime group steal from their rivals. (see below).

His wife Shareen Kashif, 30, was sentenced today after she admitted concealing criminal property after the cash-filled box was found under the bed of their home in the Woodcroft area of Harlow in April 2020.

She was given a 20-month sentence, suspended for 21 months, and ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work following a hearing at Southwark Crown Court.

Shareen Kashif should have done jail time for attempting to pervert the course of justice. As a police officer, the standards of conduct are clear and failure to adhere to them deserves tough sentencing. What deterrent does a suspended sentence provide? "A police officer should be prepared to arrest their grandmother for wrongdoing", a saying my great uncle, Metropolitan Police station sergeant Ernest Fry, used to describe the level of probity required of a serving officer.

I feel they should have both gotten extremely long custodial sentences, remember these are both POLICE OFFICERS who have not only broken the law but have also assisted a gang. Those with power should be held to a far higher standard

James - I disagree. They’re police officers first - they should act more upstanding than the average citizen - but they should be punished by the same standard. I wouldn’t advocate for differing punishments for differing professions otherwise you introduce the risk of inequality.
