Harlow MP Robert Halfon on PM Boris Johnson and Sue Gray report: “I fundamentally believe that whoever has broken the law, regardless of their position, should face the penalties and consequences of their actions”

General / Tue 1st Feb 2022 at 11:46am

FOLLOWING the prime minister Boris Johnson’s statement in the House of Commons regarding the Sue Gray “update” report into lockdown parties at 10 Downing Street, we asked Harlow MP Robert Halfon, the following questions:

YH: As you said to us a couple of weeks ago, you may feel a “sense of loyalty to the PM”, but do you not agree that you need to decide whose “side” you are on?

The side of the Harlow residents who kept the rules? The Harlow members of the NHS, the families who could not visit their loved ones at care homes such as Tye Green and Ashlyns? The family and friends of the 630 people who have died at PAH?

Mr Halfon said: “I thank Your Harlow for contacting me about this important matter.

“My previous statements made to Your Harlow still stand. Like the rest of Harlow residents who obeyed the rules imposed, we all feel let down and disappointed by the parties held in Downing Street.

I want to be clear that they should never have happened. As the partial report published by the respected civil servant Sue Gray makes clear, there was a serious lapse in judgement that allowed a culture of not just partying, but of high levels of alcohol consumption on work premises. This is unacceptable.

Rightly, the Prime Minister apologised to the House of Commons and to the country yesterday. But I don’t believe this is enough. I want the Prime Minister to take full responsibility for what has gone on, to respond more fully to deep anguish felt by the public, and to reset the Government to make sure it focuses on the pressing issues affecting Harlow residents like the cost of living, rising energy bills, affordable housing, education and skills. I fundamentally believe that whoever has broken the law, regardless of their position, should face the penalties and consequences of their actions.

But as I have said, I am wary about a change of Government at this time because if there was to be a new leader, it would take many weeks, possibly months to establish a new Cabinet. This would mean we would not have a proper Government in place to help the nation continue to recover from the Covid pandemic, to build our economic recovery, and we could face a possible war in Europe between Russia and Ukraine. It would take a considerable period of time to elect a new leader and it would result in a period of instability for the country which we cannot afford right now.

I absolutely understand and agree with the depth of feeling across Harlow about what has gone on and I am asking for a meeting with the Prime Minister on a one-to-one basis to set out residents’ concerns about what has transpired.

“Whilst I welcome the pledge the Prime Minister has made to reform the operation in Downing Street, we will wait for the publication of the full report by Sue Gray and the investigation by the Met Police to be finalised”.

Anyone who has served in the military or reserve forces will remember the often quoted line about leadership: "Never ask anyone under your command to do something you're not prepared to do yourself." Ultimately, the best leadership technique is 'lead by example.'

There is never a "right time" for a change of leader by there are times when changing the leader is the "right thing to do" in this case because the current prime minister and his entourage played fast and loose with the truth and ignored the covid rules when they should have been leading by example. Mr Halfon's argument does not stack up. Mr Johnson could be hit tomorrow by the proverbial No 8 bus - and the business of government would still have to carry on. I suspect that the real reason for the proposition of "now is not the right time" is to buy Mr Johnson and the Conservative party he leads more time in the vain hope that people will get bored and the issue will somehow go away.

How many people in Harlow are like one young man I have spoken to today, feeling 'silly' because they stuck to the rules? This person has a public facing job and was fastidious about mask wearing etc . Had to tell him that he probably saved lives by doing so. Had to tell him that Mr Halfon continues to support Johnson. Our MP owes this young man and his other constituents an apology for this continued support. Amongst a string of Johnson's 'misjudgements' over the years the undermining of trust in public health advice is possibly the most dangerous. What more evidence is Robert Halfon waiting for? . . . Johnson is completely untrustworthy and no amount of 'shuffling the deckchairs' will compensate for that. Perhaps the truth is that our MP has no judgement either or sold his soul for another rung up the ladder?

"I fundamentally believe that whoever has broken the law, regardless of their position, should face the penalties and consequences of their actions” I hope he is also talking to Essex police because, from the recent report on YH, not many Essex lawbreakers face the consequences

Frankly, when considering all of the pressing issues that our MP has outlined above, I don't believe that we have a proper government in place to deal with them now. Parties at Number 10 on the prime minister's watch show that the pandemic wasn't taken seriously in health terms, so how can I believe that the same people are right to tackle the looming crisis of Long Covid and backlogged NHS procedures? I don't make my own key financial decisions while drunk - why should I trust that people who are regularly drunk at work can effectively manage our economic recovery? If the people in charge right now can't abide by the laws they themselves set, how do we expect them to bring Putin into line? No more excuses, Mr Halfon - it's time for the prime minister and his team to go.

I quote from the above RH response to the BJ Cabinet fiasco ;“a new leader would mean we would not have a proper Government in place”. Mr Halfon we don’t have a proper government now ! Just get rid of bozo Boris, any thing is better than him

We need self serving MPs gone from parliament. The conservatives do not care about the people they are employed to serve. This is the most corrupt government ever to hold power.

With Johnson as leader, our government is doing nothing "to help the nation continue to recover from the Covid pandemic", nor "to build our economic recovery". If "we could face a possible war in Europe between Russia and Ukraine", what influence will Johnson as PM have on the course of events?

Mr Johnson has not just let the people of the UK down he has let him self and all in his party down. He sat in the Houses of Criminals the other day laughing when confronted about breaking the law which was made by himself and The Heaith Authority. If he can break the law and get away with it what example does that give people of the UK. The only people he cares about are the ones by his side. Get rid of him and all his Etonian mates that suck up to him and suck us dry. And rename the houses of Parliament to the houses of Criminals until they are all gone.
