MPs meet up with Harlow residents in House of Commons to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day

HARLOW MP Robert Halfon and Hertford and Stortford MP Julie Marson met up with Marc from Bridget’s Tea Room in Parliament yesterday to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day.

The event comes just days before the landmark Down Syndrome Bill becomes law.

Mrs Marson and Mr Halfon supported the legislation as it went through Parliament.

They both saw Marc and Michelle Tohill, who runs Bridget’s, at the Westminster event to celebrate the day. Marc works at the tea room in Ware, is well-known in the community and Mrs Marson has dropped into the business when she is in the town.

Julie Marson said: “It was a surprise and a pleasure to catch up with Marc and Michelle and great to talk to them both about the new laws hopefully gaining Royal Assent next week,” said Mrs Marson.

“The bill is a world first and it places a duty on local authorities to look after the needs of people with Down Syndrome.

“I was delighted to support it and I was really pleased it received government support.

“Many people with Down Syndrome live active, rewarding and very independent lives but there is also an acknowledgement they face significant hurdles accessing services and support.

“This bill makes it much easier to find that help and support.”

The Bill sets out best practice across health, education, social care and housing, giving practical advice on how the appropriate steps can be taken to meet the needs of those with Down Syndrome when planning, designing and delivering services.

This is great to see. Readers may not be aware of the sad fact that most babies with Down's Syndrome are aborted, tragically. Eugenics at its worst. Well done Marc and co.
