Harlow Labour leader calls for police hubs in every area of town

COMMUNITIES blighted by more than 20,000 incidents of anti-social behaviour every week as Labour group leader Cllr Chris Vince backs Labour’s pledge for a crackdown on community crime with new police hubs in every local area

Local Cllr Chris Vince is backing Labour’s call for action to tackle anti-social behaviour, as new analysis from the party has shown that a staggering 1.2 million incidents of nuisance are recorded in England and Wales every year – equating to over 20,000 incidents every single week.

In England and Wales the percentage of people who say they never see a police officer has almost doubled since the Conservatives came to power from 25% in April 2010 to March 2011 to 48% in April 2019 to March 2020. Meanwhile, the proportion of people agreeing that the local crime and ASB issues that matter are being dealt with has fallen from 61% in 2012 to just 52% in 2020.

Labour has accused the Conservatives of abandoning local communities such as in Harlow and showing no leadership on anti-social behaviour for a decade even while Freedom of Information Requests to local councils and police forces show big increases in antisocial behaviour reports during the pandemic, and Labour’s internal research finds it is one of the most common issues raised on the doorstep alongside the cost of living.

Labour is calling on the Government to halt plans for a Royal Yacht, which is being funded by taxpayers’ money, that the Royal Family do not want and would bring no advantage to the Navy, and to use the money saved to guarantee local Police Hubs in towns and communities across the country instead. That investment could start funding a new police hub in hundreds of local neighbourhoods next year.

Labour’s police hubs will bring together a Neighbourhood Prevention Team made up of police, community support officers, local authority staff and youth workers to tackle anti-social behaviour at source.

Cllr Vince said “Communities like ours in Little Parndon and Hare Street and across Harlow have been badly let down by the Conservatives, there are still less police on our streets and in our communities than there were 12 years ago and we’re seeing the result of over a decade in under policing.

People I speak to recognise the difficult job that our police do but don’t have faith that if they report a crime anything will be done due to shortages of police officers and staff.  Things need to change.

“The last Labour administration introduced community safety officers who work with the police and council to keep communities safe despite Conservative cuts to policing.”

It’s nice to see the police 👮‍♀️ in the town makes you feel safer especially when you’re old and these scooters don’t help when they come close to you and when the kids look at there phones 📱 they don’t see where they going eyes down on the phones and walk into you.

Once again we see Harlow Labour Party talking about matters that as a District Council they have absolutely no control over. I am surprised Mr Vince hasn’t come up with a peace plan for Ukraine! Typical Labour going on about everything except what the Harlow Council can tackle: lower taxes, regeneration, new council houses, improved environmental maintenance, etc. Oh, I forgot; they were in power in Harlow for almost a decade: increased council tax every year, did no town centre regeneration but wasted £ millions on consultants for failed projects, built no council houses and let the environment go to pieces. Vote Harlow Labour at your peril.

Police need to be visible in all areas of the town at all times of day & night Whether it’s police on foot, push bikes or in car They have a tough job granted and I’m a big supporter of police But with a town of nearly 90000 now, police numbers & presence has to reflect this

The police could start by arresting the guy in the picture above. He looks like he is up to no good. He is not even wearing a tie, proper scallywag.

Chris, when you talk about police hubs do you mean they should ride bikes? Seriously, I fully support a more visible police presence although the ideas presented do seem a little bureaucratic. Marie Compton, Labour have got some things wrong. But are they worse than Boris's garden bridge, his Irish sea bridge, the billions lost to fraud during covid, the £39billion outstanding income tax or the tory failure to develop an energy policy?

Dear Peter Henegan, we are talking about local politics. Whoever is elected to Harlow Council should be focusing exclusively on issues that Harlow Council can influence/manage and not on National or other extraneous matters. There is a strong argument that local councils should have independent councillors rather than those representing national political parties. My point was that on the range of issues that Harlow Labour administration should have been handling, their performance was awful and, once again Mr Vince is raising an issue that Harlow Council has minimal influence over.

The local Tories are of course claiming in their electoral literature time and time again that they have delivered a £205 Council Tax reduction when of course we know that is not true. They have also been trumpeting about a new hospital, which seems as far away as ever. The house building boom turns out to be nothing of the sort, over the long term very similar to Labours Plan and as for the town centre all we have seen of regeneration so far is a few shrub boxes in Broadwalk. I should remind readers that both Parties were complicit in closing the Council's Neighbourhood offices in the early 200's which should of gone on to become more of a centre for community development to include a physical hub for community policing teams.

I have been impressed with the Green Party standing in so many wards. I normally support Labour, but their campaign is largely devoid of local issues. I will be voting for the Green Party.

Hard to take Labour seriously on law and order when they are led by a bloke who got a knighthood for introducing Early Release!
