Proud launch of LGBTQ+ Support Group in Harlow

Communities / Sat 16th Apr 2022 at 07:16am

THE inaugural group meeting of ‘LGBTQ+ Support Harlow’ was a resounding success with over 40 people attending.

The meeting discussed a wide range of subjects of concern to the LGBTQ+ community along with some fun ideas for events which will now be taken forward and addressed by the team formed to co-ordinate the group.

It is the intention of the new group to provide access to support and advice with a range of partner agencies. It will also create social events for a range of ages including a 11-18 group in conjunction with Mind in West Essex.

Organiser James Griggs said “ I am truly overwhelmed by the response to this initial meeting. I knew there was a need to provide this kind of support service and opportunities for social activities but the number of people attending and offering such a huge range of experience, ideas and commitment to taking this project forward has been astonishing.

I cannot wait to get started with the team to create something that will enhance with pride the diversity of opportunity in Harlow”

If anyone wishes to be added to the mailing list for the group to receive updates and details of future events they should send their details to [email protected]

JJ, what's wrong with giving 11-18 year olds access to mental health advice? Please do tell.

MM, I share your query. JJ please do tell us just what it is you find so concerning. We now, thankfully, live in a society whose more enlightened members recognise that everyone is different and some may need support and advice in coming to terms with their identity in the face of prejudice from the less enlightened. This support may well be needed from a very early age and the earlier it is offered the sooner a person may come to realise that they are valued, loved and free to be who they are. I cannot imagine how anyone could find that a worrying proposition.

JJ, that attitude is exactly why this group is needed. The instances of serious mental health issues amongst the young LGBTQ community makes for grim reading. Due in part to social exclusion and the insensitivity of the world they live in. All anyone ever wants is to feel loved and accepted. Every child deserves that.
