Harlow MP Robert Halfon describes oil bosses as “new oligarchs”

HARLOW MP Robert Halfon rose on the floor of the House of Commons to address the cost of living crisis in the middle of a speech by the chancellor of the exchequer, Rishi Sunak.
Mr Halfon said: “There is no recognition from Labour Members of the £22 billion that the Government put in to help with the cost of living, particularly the 5p cut in fuel duty.
“However, I do have one ask of my right hon. Friend. The oil companies are not passing the cuts to the pumps. They take ages to reduce the prices when the international oil price falls, but oil bosses are earning multi-million pound salaries and getting multi-million pound bonuses.
“They are, in essence, the new oligarchs. I urge him to consider both a windfall tax on the oil companies, which we can then use to cut taxes for the lower paid or to cut energy bills, and a pump-watch monitor to make sure that there is fair competition and that consumers get a fair deal at the pumps.
“None the less, I genuinely recognise all the work that he has done thus far to cut the cost of living.

All windy waffle as usual. He’s spoken and written about the need for a windfall tax on the energy companies but last night he abstained from the vote thus advancing his invertebrate credentials by sitting on his hands and doing absolutely nothing to help. Just who’s side is he on? Not yours or mine that’s for sure!
He's not on our side James None of them are !
If he agrees with a windfall tax on the oil companies, then why did not vote for it last night? Or is it a case of saying one thing, but doing another? Voting for it would have sent a much clearer message to the Chancellor.
Would that be the 5p fuel duty cut that bp made 2p and then zero 3 days later, a lot of help that was Mr halfon, my employer has done more to help me financially than the tories.
The trouble with the Tory Party is the minute you do or say anything they don't like, or God forbid vote against they want - they leap at you with threats and insults. But the question I have for Robert is this - do you actually believe in any of this enough to actually vote for it. Or are you too weak and only abstain whilst seeking publicity by writing articles for the Sun!
As the government accounts for about 50% of the cost of fuel in the taxes, VAT and duty perhaps the government could stop being so greedy and reduced its take.
Spineless inaction from the dishonourable Halfon.
Adam your spot on. More tax is recovered by the UK government via duty and vat than the fuel is actually worth as a net figure! The difficulty though is the government is a one way system only, it only tells, not listens.
