THE BMAT community are shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Frederick Gibberd College’s Classics and Latin teacher Chris Pilcher.

Mr Pilcher joined SFG in September 2020 as a trainee, part of the pioneering team that launched the school. As a newly qualified teacher in September 2021, he joined full time where his passion for his subjects inspired a new generation of young people in Harlow.
Dee Conlon, SFG Headteacher. said: “This is a very sad time for our community and for Mr Pilcher’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
“Our SFG family has lost a beloved member and words fail to describe our grief. Mr Pilcher may no longer be with us, but he will forever be in our hearts.”
YH understands that Mr Pilcher became ill whilst taking part in the Hackney Half Marathon.
A spokesperson for the Hackney Half Marathon said:
“We are greatly saddened to share that a participant in the Hackney Half has passed away. We are in close contact with the runner’s family and offer our deepest condolences and support. To respect the privacy of the participant’s family and friends, we will be making no further comment at this time.
My sincere condolences for the family and friends, we are so sorry for the loss
This is such tragic news. My thoughts & prayers are with his family, friends, work colleagues & pupils.
Absolutely heartbreaking. The impact Mr pilcher had on the children was incredible. My child went from not really knowing or showing interest in languages to excelling in Latin. And this was all down to Mr pilchers hard work and passion for what he did. Our thoughts obviously go out to his family and friends and to all his colleagues at SFG.
Such an amazing teacher that had a massive impact on my daughters life. His ability to both teach Latin and make it fun and easy were incredible. Mr Pilcher will be very much missed and kept in the hearts of many x
Looks like he died having taken part in a strenuous run. A young man. Tragic. Rest in Peace.
I am deeply saddened to hear this news. Did something happen at the marathon run? We had the pleasure to meet him a few times and he was an absolute gentlemen. Our condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and pupils.
Mr Pilcher was a passionate and fantastic teacher that was devoted to showing his pupils how to be affectionate towards classical languages. Having been taught by him, I can say that I wouldn’t have been given a better understanding of classics without Mr Pilcher’s assistance. His family, friends and work colleagues are all in my prayers. He will be missed greatly.
Tragic and so sad. Our condolences to the family. Hope the fellow runners who were present are being supported 🙏RIP
I teach Greek and Latin at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, USA. I saw an online interview with Mr Pilcher in 2020. He reminded me of the best of my own students and colleagues, and filled me with optimism for the future of the subject. May his memory be an eternal blessing.
