Labour slam Tory Harlow Council leader after he described staff’s conduct as “Putinesk”

A HARLOW Labour councillor has slammed the Conservative leader of Harlow Council after he described his own officer’s conduct as comparable to Russia leader, Vladimir Putin.
Councillor Lanie Shears, shadow portfolio holder for governance, was commenting on an article by Councillor Russell Perrin published on a Conservative Party website.
In the article, cllr Perrin refers to the relationship between council employees and members of the public during the Labour administration (2012 to 2021).
He said: “Harlow’s decline in several areas vexed many residents. Our town centre was run down, our roads and estates tired, our green environment dishevelled and gone to seed. I met countless civic-minded people who have experienced ‘Putinesk’ (sic)threats and levels of resistance from the Council when trying to do the right thing.
Cllr Shears has responded. She said: “Harlow has the Ukrainian flag flying from the civic building in support of that country and its people suffering at the hands of Putin.

“Council Staff are supporting the town to collect donations for refugees of the war in Ukraine, yet in an article written by Russell Perrin for Conservative Home, Councillor Perrin likens council officers to Putin.
“Putinesk threats” is the term he uses when describing hard working council staff.
Using such a term at any time would be offensive, even more so while Putin’s bombs are killing innocent children, women and men. Quite frankly we expect better from the leader of Harlow council.
“Running services is no easy task. It can be incredibly difficult balancing policies, and some instances law and legislation, with need. Harlow Council Officers work hard to keep the wheels of Council turning. Particularly during the recent pandemic.
“Treating people with such distain and disrespect is quite frankly shameful, and he should apologise to staff immediately for this offensive language.
“Councillor Perrin should remember that treating people with respect and dignity in the workplace is not only important on a human level, but also a requirement of council policy!
“You would think the recent failure of the Conservative vetting process which lead to them selecting a candidate with racist views might give some pause for reflection. Having read what Councillor Perrin has written, alas, it seems not”.
I am slightly concerned by the hate and constant bombardment on individual who chose to serve their community heartily Labour or Conservative; however do note Your Harlow’s stirring on the matter with wordings and stories. We get the important of news sells but this is clearly breaking down our community so it needs to cease. Let’s stop with this political war and get on with the job we are all expected to do respectfully rather than all this playground squabble. The people of Harlow deserve better. Your Harlow and Councillors alike should especially at this time focus dealing with real issues and focus on the people of Harlow and sorting of the town with the plan. Perhaps people should be reminded that slander and malicious statement are damaging and unnecessary of which could have legal implications. As for the mentioning of Nick - let’s draw the line and stop this . Let people be and stop bullying online or targeting people ‘s vulnerability. As for Russell character on here, personally fir one to deal with a hectic career, own family and with integrity lead the Council is something which requires accolades not criticism. We must stop using and referring to language which misleads the public all for the sake of votes. Like Racist “Tory “ and now the use of misquoting Russell. I find it very offensive and deeming. Reading on the Harlow Council website review the complaints from the people of Harlow should be addressed and Council staff, members of the public and Councillor be treated fairly as well as maintaining good relations. And should anyone not really constructively then silent will be golden. I want to see plan and solution not banter .
Wow Stacy, a Putinesk rebuttal.
Stacey, if the Leader of the Council is running down Council employees.. that is indeed newsworthy. I'm in Mark Hall ward, I didn't vote for Lanie but am so glad that I have a cllr that will speak out, when it's needed ...
Its interesting to read the comments made by Cllr Shears but not surprising that they bare little resemblance to the actual article or the facts. Cllr Perrin does not make any mention of council staff in the article and the reference is clearly referring to the labour administration which was in power at the time. Even the Editor referenced that in the article Letters and articles written in Your Harlow at the time support the reference to the failures of the Labour Administration https://www.yourharlow.com/2021/01/28/letter-to-editor-harlow-council-and-business-grants/ https://www.yourharlow.com/2021/02/02/letter-to-editor-harlow-hairdresser-appeals-to-harlow-council-over-business-grants/ https://www.yourharlow.com/2021/02/11/tory-leader-still-seeking-answers-over-business-grants-from-harlow-council-labour-leader/ https://www.yourharlow.com/2021/02/01/letter-to-editor-appeal-to-harlow-council-over-business-grants/ Cllr Shears comments are clearly self serving and do ironically meet the criteria of Putinesque as referenced by the Urban Dictionary...I Quote: "Putin’s Bitch, being positively Putinesque, publicly humiliates each adversary the same day they move against him, to attempt to prevent their truths from gaining traction"
Nick, here is a quote from the article in question, which is used to illustrate ‘Putinesk’ behaviour: “ One man who cleared dumped rubbish from the field at the back of his house and trimmed the brambles that sprawled over his garden fence received an enforcement letter from the council telling him he had ‘encroached on and was interfering with Council land’. What a charming thank you note from a failing council. And he wasn’t alone; so many have had similar defeating encounters.” You are trying to tell us that was Councillors not officials who wrote that, yes? Come off it.
I read Cllr Perrin's article and particularly like his reference to a pile driver approach. This was Robert Halfon before being elected, failed a couple of times but was always visible. Labour don't even have a parliamentary candidate yet. I think the Tory govt is appalling yet locally I think they deserve a chance.Time will tell if they succeed.
This from a Conservative Council that over road the best interests of Harlow, a mass campaign and are intent on trashing the environment for the sole benefit of their property developer and East Herts Council chums against the advice of officers. No doubt when Harlow is choked by traffic and ruined by the overload as a consequence of the Conservatives they'll turn round a blame the hard working officers. It's like blaming the civil service for the state of the country rather than MPs and political parties.
" Yawn"
shocking that no one at Your Harlow can spell or proof-read the word "PUTINESQUE" #facepalm .... shoddy 6th form journalism again.
Martin, Cllr Perrin spelt it "Putinesk" in his article (which I am sure you have read) on Conservative Home. You will also see that in his quote we have inserted the word "sic". I am sure you know what that means as you seem like a very learned fellow indeed.
Okay, so we really should rename “Your Harlow” as it's clearly not a netural voice when its employees are made up of Harlows Local Labour Counsellors?! How about “Your Labour” - that's more of an accurate tag line. To be very honest it doesn't matter too much (clear biased opinions) it's hardly got a great following. Harlow Moaning page has more of a following.
