Labour question cost of Tory leadership restructure as deputy leader “removed”

News / Wed 1st Jun 2022 at 06:06am

THE LEADER of the Harlow Labour Group has commented on the increasing number of portfolio holders in the Tory cabinet at Harlow Council as well as the “removal” of the deputy leader, nine months after the leader also stepped down.

Councillor Chris Vince said: “It doesn’t seem that long ago that the Labour leader of the Council Mark Ingall was criticised for his decision to include a new portfolio holder role for equality and diversity, which at the time brought the number in the cabinet up to eight, with the then shadow finance lead Cllr Perrin leading the charge.

I wonder if perhaps the Conservatives ought not have kept the role following the recent news that their Councillor in Bush Fair was sacked following vile racist and homophobic tweets?

However, here we are only 14 months into this Conservative regime and the same Cllr Perrin has increased his cabinet to nine, adding an additional cost to the council to go with the £11,000 the Bush Fair by election is going to cost. With a party who have already spent the reserves, I have to wonder where they’re going to find the ‘efficiency savings’ to cover this.

Equally just over six months after their leader Andrew Johnson stepped down it seems that the turmoil within the leadership of the local Conservative party continues, this time it is deputy leader Joel Charles who finds himself removed unceremoniously from his role.

All of these inner power struggles sadly take away focus on the people of Harlow all Councillors are elected to represent.

This recent announcement about the changes in the cabinet haven’t just come at the 11th hour but rather the 13th as we had our first full council meeting last week.

As leader of the opposition my task is to prepare a team to shadow the cabinet. It would have been nice to know they intended to make those changes in advance.

Wouldn’t it be nice if parties put as much effort into developing policies and working on projects in the most efficient way rather than sitting and writing constant snipes at each other. What would Labour do differently exactly? They had the council for god knows how long and it was a disaster, they can’t even win it back during a time when our prime minister is a joke…

Cllr Vince should remember that Harlow Trades Union Council's members within Harlow Labour Party routinely lobbied to abandon the Leader and Cabinet system and return to the long-standing tried and tested Committee system. Also, Cllr Vince should realise that the Leader has the right to shuffle his Cabinet when required. Plus, I think it is a case of 'pot calls kettle black' when Cllr Vince talks about "inner power struggles" in the Conservatives when Momentum have been on the rampage.

I think Chris Vince is correct in what he says and does the council should be spending there money on improving services for the local community

The new portfolio has a specific responsibility for roads in Harlow. The overall number of portfolios is precisely the same number as Labour had. I am surprised Chris Vince questions this focus on roads when only about a week ago, he stated explicitly on YH that the number 1 concern of residents in his ward was the state of the roads. This is another clear example of Labour’s confused thinking and lack of any clear strategy, whilst Harlow Conservative Council focuses on the real issues and people’s priorities.

James, just what will the new Portfolio holder do then about roads? We don't need another Councillor getting involved, we already have four County Councillors who have proved of little benefit when it comes to getting roads fixed in Harlow. Residents are often confused about what Council does what, this appointment will only add to that. ECC have records of every pothole but simply do not spend enough money on reducing the number in our roads.

Frankly both Parties are totally disingenuous. We have the Labour weak Leader banging on about number of Portfolio holders when Labour increased them 50%. Banging on about the cost of a by-election when the last four were brought about by in fighting due to Momentum. We have complains about Social Media when the last Labour Parliamentary Candidate liked anti-Semitic tweets. Now we have a weak Halfon puppet Leader of the Council playing about with what the MP tells him to do. An extra Portfolio Holder and another decent guy, the Deputy Leader forced out like the previous Leader. They are both pathetic frankly. The roads are a County issue. We need someone to grow a backbone, and tell Essex CC that they are not getting a penny of the Council Tax we collect on their behalf until they get their fingers out, and start providing Harlow with the service, and particularly the roads and pavements that we pay them for, and drop the stupid policy of only filling in potholes when they get to a certain depth!

As Nick rightly points out, we are tired of hearing the local councillors bleating the Roads are nothing to do with us, and now they appoint a councillor to oversee roads . Pathetic , pointless, ineffectual self seeking amateurs.. that is all.
