ON display in the Gibberd Gallery are two exhibitions that are well worth visiting.
‘This is Our Future’ is an exhibition by Harlow College photography students who graduate this year. The exhibition and related book are part of the Essex Book Festival. The students shared their concerns about the environment and imagined a different future that is more positive.
‘The Arts & Creativity in Our Schools’ exhibition celebrates the creative activities that took place in 18 schools (primary and secondary) from April- June this year. Over 1000 pupils took part in over 50 artistic and creative activities. In addition 10 primary schools and over 400 pupils took part in 3 themed activity sessions at Harlow Museum. 5 local artists and 4 arts and cultural organisations – Livewire, Write Inspired, Matipo Arts & Harlow Museum – worked with the schools. In addition Murwalls, a local company specialising in murals, worked with 4 of schools to help design and create murals on the school sites. Overall the initiative cost £20k paid for by HEC with contributions from Harlow Cultural Leaders Group, Royal Opera House Bridge and Arts Council England. This exhibition provides a flavour of the activities undertaken and the outcomes.
Liz Boast Harlow Art Trust Trustee said “We are delighted that the first exhibitions in the Gibberd Gallery this year are celebrating the creativity and imagination of Harlow’s children and young people. After two years of lockdowns and as we are still finding ways that we can safely open in this Covid present world, it is wonderful to have the Gallery filled with a fabulous mix of puppets, mini sculptures, poetry, films and illustrated concertina books. The thought provoking and beautifully presented photography exhibition by Photography Students at Harlow College is well worth spending time to see. Our thanks go to all the schools, the College, the artists and arts organisations involved and to Chris Fluskey from Harlow Education Consortium.”
There is a special Saturday opening on Saturday 9 July 11am – 4pm. ‘The Arts & Creativity in Schools is open Monday – Friday until Friday 15 July. ‘This is Our Future’ is open Monday – Friday 9.30am -4.30 pm until Friday 12 August.
This is a terrific exhibition- well done to all involved.
