Over fifty drivers fined at scene of fatal crash on M11 near Harlow

FIFTY-two drivers will receive fixed penalty notices after dash cam footage captured them using the hard shoulder while officers dealt with a serious collision.
The FPNs will be sent to the registered keepers of 52 vehicles following an investigation by officers at Extra Eyes who received dash cam footage of vehicles using the M11 hard shoulder to avoid queues on Friday 17 June.
Roads Policing Unit officers dealing with a serious collision that afternoon, were hindered by the inconsiderate driving of some road users after the northbound M11 was closed between junctions 7 and 8.
Adam Pipe, Head of Roads Policing, Essex, said: “When we attend any collision, we shut the road to carry out our investigation, treat the casualties and make sure all road users are not put at further risk.
“We understand the frustration this may cause some drivers, but it is imperative that we carry out our enquiries which may take some time but are completely necessary.
“It is not acceptable that some drivers feel their inconvenience is more important than anyone else’s delay and take risks like this.
“Poor decisions during a time like this can hinder emergency services and prolong our attendance.”
Delays following an RTA were exacerbated when it was decided that in the event of a death, the area would be considered a crime scene with all the necessary and time consuming investigations into what, at the end of the day, would most likely be just a road traffic accident. Unfortunate for those involved but not a murder. The police will be always obliged to put this into effect until the Police Commissioner reverses this policy.
No one likes a snitch. As for the delays; I was in Canada a few years back and there was an article congratulating the local police for only closing a road for 25 minutes after a fatal accident, and they managed to collect all the evidence they needed for prosecution’s in that time. It can be done!
Using ExtraEyes is making our roads safer. Any car dashcam footage can be uploaded and the police will consider prosecution, as has happened here. Stupid, inconsiderate and dangerous drivers watch out, it is only a matter of time!
In response to Alan's comments, I don't think our police service would be as outstanding as it is if they base investigations on what "most likely" happened. We have some of the most sophisticated and experienced policing and forensic professionals in the world - they can take as long as necessary to do their jobs! Perhaps travel by train or public transport if you cannot handle road traffic collisions being thoroughly and professionally investigated. As to ExtraEyes, absolutely! We are all equal before the law and held to the same obligations when it comes to following road closures. If you're a selfish driver impinging on the professional duties of others then you deserve to be penalised!
Shame Essex police don't do nothing about a theft when given video footage of the persons and vehicle involved
I would do the same. Once the Police arrive you will never get home. Thry need to look at how other countries tackle RTA's even fatal ones.
If it was a smart motorway which are death traps, then the hard shoulder would be opened to let traffic go thru. Is this just an excuse to issue fixed penalty notices to easy targets?
It’s funny, you can submittier dash came footage and get a prosecution of someone that has committed a minor offence, yet if you submit clear 4K cctv footage of a burglary and the vehicles and people involved, nothing happens. Shows where police priorities lay.
In April, my little granddaughter, a dog and I were stuck on the M11 for 4.5 hours. While it wasn't the most pleasant experience, we passed it through playing games and telling stories, grateful that we weren't at the painful end of the problem. The police handled that complex situation magnificently, making decisions based on available info., closing access roads, turning thousands of vehicles and carefully leading us all back off the motorway. Remarkable piece of work. It's anything but easy.
My wife and eye set in that trafic on m11 one and half hrs we did notice cars doing that going up the hard shoulder they deserve all what they have got some making out they have problem with there car they think we have just come of a Banana Boat pull the other one twats.
I don't approve of banana boats on the motorway Dennis
I know we all have our off day where we make silly decisions that cost us. I’m pleased to say I know my Highway Code and wasn’t on the road at the time. This is news worthy. Some of those drivers were probably influenced by the idiots who lost their patients. That’s the trouble, you see… When we listen to fools the mob rules…
A storm in a tea-cup for most subscribers who commented about this incident. For more years ago than I should remember I operated my own road haulage company of refrigerated HGV's delivering all types of food, frozen or chilled. Anyway I was delivering a load of chilled shellfish to Lyon, way down on the Route to the south. A major incident, a serious collision had occurred near Lyon which had backed up the motorway for over 106 miles. The French, in general have very little patience for any form of state authority and show disdain for officialdom of any type. After sitting for several hours waiting for something to happen, a lot of the people around where I was parked, and in a determined and aggressive fashion went to the barrier and began bending the metal to and fro to weaken it, when the barrier began to break most of the disgruntled people got in their cars and vans drove through the gap and drove down the live lane against on-coming traffic. The incident was noted, as the longest in Europe at the time
