ONE of Harlow’s most well known sculptures ‘Portrait Figure’ by F.E. McWilliam was carefully taken down and taken away for repairs on Monday 25 July by expert art conservators Mtec. The sculpture will be returning to Harlow.
‘Portrait Figure’ was bought by Harlow Art Trust in 1957 for the town centre. It is a portrait of sculptor Elisabeth Frink when she was a student of the artist F.E McWilliam at Chelsea School of Art. The sculpture was Grade II listed by English Hertiage in 2016.
The base of sculpture had been damaged and railings have been around the artwork for the last few months while Harlow Art Trust worked with Harlow Council to secure the funds needed for the repairs to take place. Harlow Art Trust are grateful to the Council, the Henry Moore Foundation, Essex Heritage Trust and the Friends of Harlow Sculpture Town for supporting the conservation work for this wonderful artwork.
The Trust will make sure ‘Your Harlow’ knows when the sculpture will be returning to Harlow.
