IN the last two weeks, the Roads Policing Unit have made sixty-five arrests in connection with drink or drug driving

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) took to the roads to tackle the issue of drink and drug driving to keep roads in Essex moving and keep everyone safe.

In the fourteen-day period (21 November – 4 December) during the men’s World Cup and in the run up to Christmas, 29 drink drive arrests were made with a further 23 arrests for drug driving. Thirteen people failed to provide a specimen.

Each year, Essex Police deal with serious or fatal collisions where drink or drug driving is a contributary factor. This year, they are asking you help us to prevent, persuade and report drink drivers this Christmas.

Inspector Matt Crow, Essex Police’s Roads Policing Team, is highlighting the campaign to all our communities in Essex, saying: “People who drink and drive take risks every time they get behind the wheel of a car. They put themselves and others at risk.

“We want to put a stop to that and are asking the public to help us and support our campaign which aims to save lives by deterring people from drink and drug-driving, and to deal robustly with offenders.

“We are calling on the public who suspect family or friends of drink driving to prevent, persuade and – as a last resort – report drink driving to police this Christmas.”

This year, anyone who is charged with drink or drug driving during December will be expedited through the court procedure, meaning that you could be charged to appear in court within 48 hours of your arrest and disqualified from driving.
