THE Venerable Vanessa Herrick has announced her retirement after serving as Archdeacon of Harlow since 2017.

Commenting on the announcement, Archdeacon Vanessa said:

“After nearly forty years in licensed ministry, I am looking forward to retirement and to the opportunity to explore new things. I’ve appreciated the chance to work in five different dioceses and exercise a wide range of ministries over that time and I’m grateful to God and to the many people I’ve worked and served with for all I’ve learnt and enjoyed.  In retirement, I plan to focus more on speaking, writing and working with people one to one and to getting involved in life beyond the church walls!”

The Bishop of Chelmsford, the Rt Revd Dr Guli Francis-Dehqani, has paid tribute to Archdeacon Vanessa and thanked her for her service to Chelmsford Diocese:

“Archdeacon Vanessa has been a great servant to the parishes and worshipping communities of the Harlow Archdeaconry and to our wider diocese. She will be missed by many colleagues and friends including on the Bishop’s Leadership Team. I am very grateful to her for the significant contribution she has made, particularly during the time since I became Diocesan Bishop. I look forward to gathering for a service so we can give thanks for Vanessa’s ministry and pray for her as she begins her retirement.”

Commenting on the announcement, the Bishop of Barking the Rt Revd Lynne Cullens added:

Vanessa has served her time as Archdeacon of Harlow with great care and wisdom.  She has formed very good and fruitful relationships with the parishes and worshipping communities across the Archdeaconry, and indeed the wider Barking area, and she will be missed by many people, not least friends and colleagues in the Barking Area Team.  I remain personally grateful for the support Vanessa has generously afforded me in my time here as bishop. We give thanks for all that she has brought to us in her service as Archdeacon of Harlow and we will be praying for her and David as they begin their retirement.

Archdeacon Vanessa was ordained as a priest in 1997, having been a Lay Reader since 1984. She served as Curate at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral before becoming Chaplain at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and a Tutor in Pastoral Theology at Ridley Hall. She then served as Director of Ministry and Director of Ordinands for the Diocese of Ely between 2003 and 2012 before moving to the Diocese of Salisbury where she served as Rector of Wimborne Minster and the Northern Villages until her appointment as Archdeacon of Harlow.

Archdeacon Vanessa will be retiring in March 2023 and we’ll be in touch in the coming weeks with information about how people can say farewell and give thanks for her ministry in Chelmsford Diocese.
