Stewards Academy teacher makes appeal as she trains to run London Marathon for her stricken dad

STEWARDS Academy drama teacher Abbie Martin is set to run the London Marathon for her stricken father.

Abbie said: “I am running the London Marathon for a charity extremely close to my heart, Muscular Dystrophy UK.

My dad Neil (as did his late sister) suffer with a rare form of this muscle wasting disease. There is currently no cure for Muscular Dystrophy.

“Growing up, I’ve seen my dad’s condition deteriorate. My dad has gone from walking, to walking with a stick, to walking with a frame, to being in a wheelchair for long distances to now being permanently in a wheelchair with little movement or strength in his arms meaning he needs support with things we take for granted everyday.

“His condition effects every muscle in his body. His voice has got quieter, he can no longer chew or swallow some of his once favourite foods and following an operation in October for an ear problem, his body had huge challenges recovering, spending over a month in hospital and nearly three weeks in intensive care.

I love my dad and seeing how much his condition has impacted his life is hard.

Muscular Dystrophy UK fund research and support for families and individuals living with this condition.

“I have to admit that I’m not much of a runner and I’ve got a lot of training to do but I’m running because I can, something my dad can only dream of doing.

“I’ve not only got a long way to go with my training but also my fundraising, so I am appealing to YourHarlow readers to see if they can help.

“All donations, big or small, are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.”

We will be catching up with Abbie between now and the big day on April 23rd.

Muscular Dystrophy UK is the charity for the 110,000 children and adults living with muscle-wasting conditions in the UK.

There’s currently no cure, and in many cases, it limits lives. MDUK do vital work in funding pioneering research into treatments and cures as well as providing vital information, advice, resources and support for individuals and families living with these conditions.
