AFTER the devastating effects of the Turkey-Syria earthquake, members of the Stewards Academy community organised a bake sale to help raise funds for the disaster appeal.

The event was organised by Ms Stylianou, Subject Leader for Technology and one of the EMPV staff members, and she delivered assemblies on the first day of term explaining what had happened and what the academy was going to do to support. 

Ms Stylianou, said: “It is really important that our pupils understand what is going on in the world and how it may impact them or those around them. It’s quite close to my heart personally as I come from a community full of Turkish and Turkish Cypriots. We also have quite a few Turkish students and students from the Middle East in the academy. I wanted to highlight also the stories of hope and support that have emerged.”

Ms Hinds, EMPV lead, also held a meeting that was open to all, to discuss how they were feeling and any concerns.

Mrs Ginger, Headteacher, said: “The response to this tragic event and the pupils’ enthusiasm in being involved with the bake sale, highlight the strength of feeling and community spirit within Stewards Academy. A huge thank you to all involved and to Ms Stylianou for organising.”
