Business Crime event over breakfast with Federation of Small Businesses

SMALL business owners from across Essex are being invited to get the latest crime prevention advice to keep them and their customers safe.

On Thursday 30 March from 08.00am to 09.00am, the Federation of Small Businesses will be hosting a free virtual event with Essex Police.

Open to all small business owners, (FSB members and non-members), the session runs from 8am to 9am and will cover topics such as cyber-crime, shoplifting, anti-social behaviour and domestic abuse.

Participants will also have the opportunity to ask the Business Crime Team specific questions about crimes affecting their business and network with other small business owners.

Essex Development Manager, Ann Scott, said: “Small to medium enterprises account for 99% of the business community and contribute 52% to the UK economy. Right now, they are facing major headwinds and economic challenges – sky-high energy costs, record inflation, falling consumer confidence, and staff shortages… Being hit by crime is the last thing our small business owners will need”.

She continued: “Rather than being passive victims, many smaller firms recognise that they have agency. FSB research shows that the vast majority of smaller businesses have taken at least one ‘deterrent’ measure to protect themselves against traditional and/or cybercrime. But they cannot achieve success on their own and this event is designed to help them with that”.

The FSB offers members a wide range of vital business services including advice, financial expertise, support, and a powerful voice heard in government. Established over 40 years ago, the non-profit making organisation is the UK’s largest business support group with several in-person and virtual events across Essex every month.

Ann Scott continued: “Business crime is chronically under-reported. We’re pleased to be working with Essex Police to help shine a spotlight on how small business owners can play their part in keeping the Essex business community safe. We need to help Essex Police build a clear picture of what crimes are affecting businesses and this event will be crucial to that”.
