Harlow Council cabinet set to approve key step for town centre demolition contracts

News / Thu 23rd Mar 2023 at 01:28pm

HARLOW Council is set to award demolition contracts which will pave the way for two key town centre regeneration schemes.

Tonight (23 March 2023) Harlow’s cabinet is set to agree a report for the council to move towards appointing contractors to demolish the Terminus House bridge and Occasio House.

Both demolitions are key for the delivery of regeneration schemes in the town centre.

The Terminus Street bridge will be demolished as part of work to build a new Harlow Sustainable Transport Interchange and Hub. This scheme will see the regeneration of the existing bus station and interchange, to create a new, high-quality transport hub supporting the existing bus network and future sustainable transport corridors as part of the Harlow and Gilston Garden Town project.

The derelict Occasio House site will be demolished as part of the Harlow arts and cultural quarter scheme. This scheme will see the transformation of the Playhouse and College Squares, along with the redevelopment of the ex-Occasio House site, to create a new, high-quality arts, culture and leisure-led scheme.

Councillor Michael Hardware, cabinet portfolio holder for regeneration and strategic growth, said:

“Over the last 18 months, the council has been successful in its bids to government for funding to deliver significant regeneration across Harlow town centre. Recent awards totalling over £40million through the Towns Fund and Levelling Up Fund programmes both have project completions of March 2025. The two demolition contracts are key for kickstarting these schemes which are part of the one of the biggest regeneration programmes to ever take place in the town centre.”

Demolition of the Terminus House bridge and Occasio House site will take place later this year.

Surely Terminus house bridge is a safe walk way from the car park & for the residents of Terminus house into the town centre why the need to demolish it??

Harlow’s Own Albert Hall. Unfortunately building was substandard and used to house vulnerable teenagers. Under whose watch was this allowed to happen?

All points of egress from Terminus House should be blocked to stop the residents of the midden from accessing the Town Centre.
