Essex Police Roads Policing conduct eyesight tests as part of “Is Your Vision Roadworthy?” campaign

LAST month, Essex Police’s Roads Policing officers conducted 25 eyesight tests in support of the National Police Chiefs’ Council Campaign, “Is Your Vision Roadworthy?”

The campaign aimed to highlight drivers have a legal obligation to ensure that their vision is good before they take to the roads.

Our Roads Policing Team carried out on-the-spot eyesight tests where necessary to combat dangerous driving throughout the campaign between 27 February and 15 March.

Thankfully, only one person (aged 90) had their driving licence revoked as a result of failing the eyesight test, meaning 24 drivers passed the test as their vision was roadworthy!

Drivers, aged between 27 and 80, were stopped as the result of mainly collisions and not wearing their seatbelts: RPU officers issued three fixed penalty notices for non-seatbelt wearing.

During the same period, 202 fixed penalty notices were issued to drivers caught using their mobile phones whilst driving – which could be a contributory factor in serious collisions (Fatal Four offence). Drivers were mostly men and in the age group of over 25 years.

Talking ahead of the “Is Your Vision Roadworthy?” campaign Head of Roads Policing, Adam Pipe, said: “Your sight is one of the most important tools used to drive; it means you can judge the road conditions and allows you time to adjust your driving in hazardous circumstances.

“But, as we age, our eyesight can deteriorate, meaning we may need glasses.

“In general, eye experts recommend drivers have their eyes tested every two years.

“Most drivers know that their car needs to be roadworthy and will service and MOT it.

“I’d urge drivers to check their eyesight too so they can keep themselves and others safe.”

Essex Police have issued 335 revocations between 2014 and 2022.
