Essex Schools Under 16 Trophy

Passmores Academy 3 v 2 Southend High School

HAVING faced heartbreak in the semi finals of last seasons competition, the U16s side at Passmores Academy had a score to settle when the draw was made for this year’s competition. Six rounds of competition stood between Passmores and their goal … this year they wanted the final!

Having to play in the preliminary rounds to even qualify for this year’s competition, they knew it would be a long and testing campaign, yet through sheer grit, determination, and endeavour they made it.

Being the first Passmores side to reach the final of the Essex cup, the team knew expectations were high. Focused and ready for the challenge the team filed out of the tunnel ready for kick off.

Living up to the challenge, Passmores started the stronger side, with the first chance coming inside of the first minute, J. Mahon picking up the ball on the turn and sliding a through ball into K. Mellon whose shot was saved well with the keeper standing tall to the first attempt.

The intensity was high with Passmores high press, who showed to be the dominant side in the first 20 minutes. This was rewarded with the first goal of the match as a flick into the box was met by J. Mahon who coolly lifted the ball over the keeper to break the deadlock, Passmores Academy 1-0 Southend HS.

Passmores pressed for the second goal as Southend found their way into the game, clearly growing in confidence and settling into the game, some neat interchanges on the Southend right hand side opened a couple of chances but the Passmores defence stood strong.

Until late into the first half, a clearance from the Southend defence launched deep into the Passmores half caused some confusion, which the Southend HS striker pounced on and with a well taken finish brings the game level Passmores Academy 1-1 Southend HS.

Both teams saw out the first half leaving the score 1-1.

The sides switched ends and the second half commenced. The game was much more in the balance in the early stages of the second half, both teams creating chances bringing out last ditch defending from the Passmores backline, showing the passion and determination that had got them this far!

A break in play as Passmores had been awarded a freekick on the halfway line, S. Morris steps up and launches the ball high into the box, the keeper comes to collect but there is a collision with a tracking defender, J. Mahon latches onto the loose ball and knocks it home for the much needed second goal, Passmores Academy 2-1 Southend HS.

With the game on a knife edge, Southend fought back creating opportunities and piling on the pressure with a succession of corner kicks. With 10 minutes to go, a turnover in midfield saw the ball drop to H. Quick’s feet, a smart turn and driving towards the Southend goal, he slots in an inch perfect pass into J. Mahon’s feet who once again steps up to the occasion slotting the ball to the keeper’s left making the game 3-1 and surely secures the win in front of the travelling Passmores fans.

With a two-goal lead, Passmores rang out the changes with a triple substitution as they looked to see out the final 10 minutes. With nothing to lose and the bit between their teeth, Southend launch an onslaught of free kicks, corners and crosses into the Passmores box, with a loose ball, the Southend attacker turns quickly but Passmores goalkeeper S. Morris is equal to it again, getting down to his left quickly, tipping the ball onto the post denying a vital second goal.

However, the onslaught continued, and Southend were finally rewarded for their continuous pressure picking up a second goal with a neat finish to the keepers left hand side.

It had all been left late, with one minute to play and a Passmores centre, a mistake from a clearance gifted Passmores a corner. With only seconds to play, running down the clock the eventual clearance was met with the final whistle, with the final score Passmores Academy 3-2 Southend HS.

Huge thank you to Willett’s BBQ for their support and kind offer for some burger vouchers for the winning squad.
