BANK Holiday Monday was named the “Big Help Out”. People were urged to volunteer their time and energy for service to their community.

The Patient Panel, a dedicated team of volunteers at Princess Alexandra Hospital, were delighted to respond to this call and decided to hold a Coronation Tea Party so that staff and patients might be involved in the national celebrations for the new king.

The panel collaborated with Harlow Hospital Radio in preparing for the event and we must express our thanks for all their support and wonderful musical entertainment.

The event was held in the hospital restaurant which had been decked in union flag colours. A junior school, St Michaels in Bishop’s Stortford provided a lovely backdrop of paintings representing the Coronation and the winner will receive a prize and all entrants to this competition will receive a certificates thanking them for their involvement.

The event exceeded all our expectations with medics, nurses, cleaners and ward staff all delighted by the celebratory fayre provided. Frail patients and their families also attended and appeared to be genuinely thrilled by this joyous activity beyond the ward.

A range of pop music and an enthusiastic cockney sing – along added to the relaxing and fun atmosphere.

The cake, provided by local Baker’s Dorrington’s, was beheld with wonder by all attendees and a bemused, but good-humoured surgeon, cut the first slice.

The Patient Panel would like to thank all their numerous helpers, restaurant staff and all attendees for making this such a memorable event and the support from Tesco’s, Edinburgh Way, and John Wright printers, Brentwood
