Letter to Editor: Hate crimes are not ok and our town is better than this

Crime / Tue 16th May 2023 at 09:17am

Dear Editor,

Hate crimes are not ok and our town is better than this.

IT is extremely upsetting to read in Your Harlow today of the racially motivated attack on a man in Paringdon Road close to the Islamic centre.

Racists are the minority and I am sure we, the majority, condemn their nasty, cowardly behaviour. Our town is better than this.

I hope the police are able to identify the people concerned and that they will be prosecuted and suitably punished.

Racism is utterly abhorrent and community leaders must speak out at every opportunity, showing their support and respect to all communities.

As a local councillor and shadow spokesperson for Governance, I ask the newly elected leader of Harlow Conservatives, Cllr Dan Swords, to condemn this incident and pledge our councils support and determination to eliminate racism within our society.

A good start would be to reinstate the Equality and Diversity element of governance, showing all our communities that we take racism and equality seriously. Maybe he would also condemn the dangerous and inflammatory language often used by the Home Secretary Suella Braverman and her colleagues.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact the police quoting incident 971 of 14th May

Cllr Lanie Shears

Shadow Spokesperson for Governance

Perhaps those of us who think this is terrible should stand by the path to the Islamic Center on Friday afternoon to show our support.

Dan, the word is "divide". As for my response to the article, nobody said hate crime is okay. And no, Harlow is not better than this. There have been many racially motivated attacks in Harlow throughout the years. I'm sure many remember the Polish man who was punched in the head at the stow who then passed away. It is no surprise Harlow voted majority in favour of Brexit. The town has a racism problem, has done for decades now...

Racism problem ???? No our town has a misinformation problem. Dan wilson, you really need to get your facts straight. Its people like you who spread false information. The polish man who got punched in the head was not a racially motivated attack. Its people like you who give our town a bad name and make it seem much worse than it is with your misinformation. Go and have a cup of sweet tea and maybe lay down for a while.

Dan Wilson, I think your insinuations regarding Harlow’s Brexit voting and racism are entirely unfounded and based on nothing more than own prejudice. Brexit was fundamentally about this nation being governed by its own laws and not some unaccountable Brussels based politburo. Racism by definition is irrational as nobody has any choice regarding their ethnicity.

Dan and Tc well said, you are both so right.

Racism is a core problem of the town. How do I know? I'm black. I've lived it. I've had my beatings. I've had people look and drop the N word at me. You want to tell me that Harlow doesn't have a racism problem? Then I'd assume you lot are the ones who turned a blind eye when I was boarding a train and three lads kicked the ever living what have you out of me while screaming the N word. Good to know Harlow isn't a racist place. I thought for a second my experiences meant something but clearly, I'm wrong.

I can see it all erupting one day in this country.

Cllr Leppard, I agree with your final sentence that racism is irrational but the rest of your comment is from la la land. Much of the Leave campaign was based on images and a narrative creating division and hatred for migrants from the EU. The little englander vote was vital for Vote Leave to succeed and many Brexiteers were shamelessly disgusting in exploiting it.

Cllr James Griggs, unlike you, I am not acquainted with 17 million plus people who voted Leave in order to opine on their specific individual reasons. I only know my own circle, which represented by sides of the debate. I can safely and honestly state that all those voting leave were not ranting bigots or so-called ‘Little Englanders’ (whatever they are), but mostly well- educated individuals - several of whom, like myself, have foreign partners-who did not relish the prospect of this country foregoing it sovereignty and becoming increasingly shackled to an undemocratic behemoth. Your conclusions are erroneous, over-simplistic and typical of the left wing labelling mentality that is currently vogue.

Cllr Leppard, when it comes to undemocratic behemoths I concede to your expertise on the matter. This current Tory Govt certainly fits the description. It’s behaving in a way that makes North Korea look enlightened.

Hey Leppard, why don't you use words that you know for a fact the majority of your voters can actually understand. And if you wish to suggest for even a moment that any single individual voted for leave using reasoned, logical thought processing - I'd call you a liar. Because not only was the leave party warned what would happen, they're also turning a blind eye to what's happening now. Luckily, the past few years they've had good scapegoats - you know, Covid and Ukraine etc to name a few. But only for so long can the leave party hide behind these things before people start to recognize the glaring issues at hand. Let's face it, the UK was sold an idea that by leaving the EU, they'd be able to essentially block immigration - that was one of, if not the, biggest reason for a lot of the typical voters. The fact 17 million voted for something so damaging to the UK suggests to me that the UK is run by, and for those who cannot think for themselves. Call me leftist for these remarks, or whatever you so choose - but you can't hide from the facts. The UK was sold a lie, and those responsible for the decades worth of damage this will cause, should be held accountable. It's a sad state of affairs when the UK - falls to stupidity, and an even sadder state when you realize it's due entirely to ignorance and racism.

Mr Wilson, without more specific information, I am not quite sure which words I have used that you struggle to comprehend. However, leaving that aside, we are all entitled to express our opinions. Free speech trumps all and is the essence of a free and democratic society and requires that we often have to tolerate opinions at variance with our own. You and I will have to agree to differ on this matter.
