Gates installed in Church Langley in attempt to curb antisocial off road motorbikes
Church Langley and Newhall / Wed 21st Jun 2023 at 08:47am
FOUR kissing gates are being installed on Harlow Common and in Church Langley to prevent antisocial behaviour by people riding motorbikes off road.
The two areas have been blighted by the problem and the council has taken action to restrict access in response to concerns from residents and the police. Cyclists, walkers and wheelchair users will still be able to get through the gates to access Church Langley and Harlow common.
The gates are being installed in key access locations at Hobbs Farm, near Malkin Drive, and at the end of Kingsdon Lane, leading through to Coalport Close. The Hobbs Farm gates are currently being installed with the Kingsdon Lane gates to follow shortly.
Councillor Nicky Purse, Church Langley councillor and cabinet portfolio holder for sustainability and environment, said:
“The issue of antisocial and nuisance offroad motorbikes is not one restricted to this area but I am pleased to see we are making a start on taking action against it. The people who ride these motorbikes across our fields, commons and cycle paths often do so at dangerous speeds and it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs, so this action will be welcomed by residents living in the local area. The measures will be reviewed and monitored working with residents to ensure they are working successfully.
“We are committed to protecting our green spaces and making them as safe as possible for our residents to enjoy .”
I love the end bit of this post. We are committed to protecting our green spaces. I can see that you are, by building all round our boarders, destruction at its best, destroying our green belt in abundance. The destruction of the river stort valley, building a 4 lane road right through this beautiful river, destroying wildlife, our tress and ecosystem s. Oh yes can see you are protecting green spaces. Don't you mean, your replacement of green belt, by man made bits of grass.
Not to mention the complete removal of so many trees and other vegetation alongside Cambridge Road up to the Beefeater.
Will i be able to get through on my mobility scooter ?
Shame they do Harlow common As well as the speeding through Potter street 20mph as if as well as the amount of heavy goods using as a cut through
At least it’s an attempt to stop the wreckless moto riders. I’m not sure it will have the desired impact, but it’s a start.
I use Kingsdon Lane to get to Tesco from Potter Street, so same question as Theresa, can a mobility scooter get through these gates ?
Why so many negative comments? The council do nothing, they are at fault. they attempt something, they are still at fault. As for the environment, yes it is important but surely stopping motor bikes being joy ridden has an environmental benefit for us all.
Well the comments say it all as to why our country is totally finished! No matter what anyone tries to do to curb anti social behaviour and make life better it gets slated and twisted to the extent that it makes you wonder what is the point anymore! The council is doing there very best in certain ares and common for sake of sanity show some support!
Terry, I think stopping theses joy riders is great idea.. that wasn't my issue.. it was the last paragraph that stuck in my claw , like many others, protecting of the environment... while on the other hand, what there doing is concreting over most of it.
There's a better answer to this problem, set up mobile Police units to catch these none compliment thugs and catch them in the act. The police have already caught a bunch of them on Wednesday afternoon around Bush Fair and taken bikes from them. Please note these are not motorcyclist, just thugs out to intimidate and copy those who do this all over the world, spread by social media.
Mobility scooters won't get through😡😡😡😡😡😡😡 I struggled getting my push bike through , still it won't take long before the kids break the fence down ,🤣

What a waste of time, these off road motorcycles ride anywhere they want, Police do not care one bit. They are up and down the lane behind our house multiple times of the day. Reported to the police multiple times as they are disturbing our quality of life, and guess what the police did? Nothing, those donut munching morons could not catch their shadow in direct sunlight. Gates for what they just ride down the road and around them, or break them and get through.
@Essexpoliceareusless I’m sure when you need them they will be there to help you, or maybe we should let them decide if they should come and help you based on your comments, have you ever tried to stop or catch someone on a motorbike riding down a dirt track when your in a car or on foot ?? No…….didn’t think so !! There are worst things going on and just be thankful that the council and Nicky Purse have done this ! They could have put the money towards something else on Church Langley like improving the parks that are need of updating or cutting back all the walk ways and ditches. If you think you can do better than the police maybe you should join up instead of slating the thin blue line .
If they are part of the green lane systems in England then motorcycles are entitled o use them,
they will still get past 🤣 no point in putting them up as it will just make it harder for mobility scooters to pass thru
