NORTH Weald Airfield staff were praised by Councillors at the meeting of Epping Forest District Council on Tuesday (25 July) after saving a man’s life.

Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) owns and manages the former Battle of Britain airfield at North Weald. The Council’s Operations Team helps to ensure smooth delivery of a range of functions from aviation and commercial activities to the Saturday market. It also hosts public events and organisations including car clubs.

Most days pass without incident, but members of the Operations Team are also trained for emergencies including first aid – skills that were successfully put to the test after an airfield visitor suffered a cardiac arrest at the airfield in May.

Service Manager – Commercial, Darren Goodey and Operations Officer, Mike Witham were first on the scene to administer lifesaving first aid to Ken Waylett, after the Chairman of the Lotus Drivers Club became ill during a driver training visit. Having made the crucial first intervention, Darren and Mike were relieved to hand over to paramedics from the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance which is also based at the airfield.

Darren, Mike, and Council Chairman Darshan Sunger were delighted to congratulate Ken on his recovery after returning to the airfield earlier this month.

EFDC Chairman, Cllr Sunger said:

“It is at times like this that we realise how important such lifesaving skills and training are to achieve the best outcome possible for the patient.

“We are proud of all our staff, but on this occasion both Darren Goodey and Mike Witham went over and beyond what is expected. Thank you to Darren and to Mike for their calm professionalism and outstanding first aid skills.”
