Football: Harlow Town take a hard earned point in goal-less battle against Basildon

Thurlow Nunn League Division South
Harlow Town 0 v 0 Basildon Town
HARLOW Town were held to a goal-less draw by a competitive and durable Basildon Town at the Pardus Wealth Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
From the whistle, this was a vastly improved performance from last Saturday’s 5-1 defeat.
This performance built on the victory away to Dunmow in midweek.
And while this was a disciplined performance with lots of commendable performances, it was also marked by an inability to score.
Harlow forward, Ishaq Ameen had a hatful of clear chances but just could not convert. To be fair, Basildon keeper, Daniel Blockley made a number of outstanding saves. We also have to be fair to the teenager, who is making the opportunities. Give time and we are sure he will convert.
Harlow Town’s defence also looked very solid. The quartet of Luque, Folkes, Hastings and Wilkins should be the rock for the rest of the season.
If there is a criticism, then it seemed very easy to run through the midfield. This was a mobile and effective part of Basildon’s game (and they had a very strong bench) but Harlow didn’t seen able to create that second wall.
This is going to be a long season and they are going to need a we’ll of fit midfielders if they are going to have a bid for promotion.
It was also noticeable that Harlow used four substitutes. They didn’t look tactical so maybe two matches a week may take its toll for a while.
On the plus side, there are some good young players on the bench. Josh Lawford stood out with some good work down the wing.
Names are starting to become familiar to us: Alex Yearwood, Jake Davis and Gavin Cockman all kept their share and put in very disciplined performances.
However, the jury is still out as to whether they faced a very good keeper or kept shooting at him or just missed the target entirely.
Harlow are in eighth place. It may be no surprise that Hutton have win their first three games of the season and sit top.
Any notions that this was going to be easy against “park footballers” have been well and truly dispelled. This is going to be a marathon and the squad will need to be prepared for the hard yards.
Harlow return to league action on Tuesday night against Hoddesdon Town and then home again next Saturday to May and Baker.
Attendance: 296
