A REVIEW of veterinary services in the UK has been launched over concerns that pet owners could be paying too much reports the BBC.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said vet fees were rising faster than other goods and services during the cost-of-living crisis.
Pet owners can face “eye-watering” bills, said consumer group Which?, which shared its findings with the CMA.

It’s about time vet prices we’re reviewed. You can often go online to get certain medications at a fraction of the price. Veterinary consultations are often overpriced and they can change what they like. I’m glad it’s being looked into. Some people can not afford to have there pets insured but love them unconditionally.
About time…vets have been taking advantage of our feelings for our pets for long enough. Vets and dentists are total ripoff merchants who only care about how much money they can take us for.
Absolutely, in is cheaper to get an MRI with sedation privately for a human than the £2500 I was charged for a pet!
This is so long overdue. Vets have been charging outrageous amounts for vet bills for years and also getting us to pay for treatment that our pets dont need. Like most things now its about the money, vets turn away a stray animal in need,so it says it all. They should be ashamed of theirselves.Disgusting.
It cost£50 just walk through the door of a vets
Few years back now, my retriever picked up something on a field, it turned out to be toxins, found in stomach. Vet could not treat her here so was sent to Newmarket vet hospital.. To cut a very long story short, we lost her in the end, she was only 3... the cost for this was 5,000 pounds...And probably a lot more now, this was good few years back... Would I do the same again if I had to ,,no, the reason wouldn't be the cost, although we struggled, the reason would be I'd listen more to vets, they advised us she wouldn't live, I said you have to try she's only a young dog.... I've been saying for years that vet costs ,are putting people of from having pets,, from rehome to rescue homes, theses places are full to the brim.. And now with the cost of living crisis.. It's shameful what vets charge, if you go on line ,you can find some meds ,for harf the price.... there's no excuses for there charges, except chasing the money...
Long over due indeed... If theses places care for animals then lower your price s... it trickle s down rescue homes, and rehome centres.
We've always had Westies, they have terrible skin problems which usually means ear problems & all had cruciate problems. We paid thousands over the years. Id love to home a senior cat or dog but the fees prohibit it.
Vets are worse than lawyers to rip you off.
I love dogs but unfortunately the greed of vets have made my decision to never have another dog again….. their prices are beyond a joke. Their greed is probably why dogs and cats get homeless cause they have made it impossible for people to afford. Well done vets, do you really love animals? Begs to differ really. Don’t know how they sleep at night.
Exactly! This is emotional blackmail on a large scale. Often, medication for pets that are supplied by vets could be procured at a fraction of the price that vets charge. Of course, vets won't be very willing to make you aware of this. Scandalous! Of course, vets have always been notoriously expensive, but surely they must be due some award for fleecing people in this whole cost of greed crisis.
I've start a petition to regulate vets fees. Their charges are astronomical of the meds they get you to use can be purchased elsewhere far cheaper. It's emotional blackmail, sadly many people have had to get rid of their pets purely because they cannot afford these crippling charges.
