Harlow Greens question sale of vapes in chemist shops

Health / Tue 7th Nov 2023 at 09:12am

THE LEADER OF the Harlow Green Party has questioned Harlow Council on whether they have any power over the sale of vapes in Chemists shops across the town.

Ms Yasmin Gregory asked: “Whilst there is a questionable debate over whether vaping does assist with the cessation of smoking, do you feel it is appropriate that a chemist has posters on their front windows advertising the selling of vapes from their premises and does she have the authority to stop the sale of such products from there?

Reply from Nicky Purse (Portfolio Holder for Environment and
Sustainability) replied: “The council has no powers to prevent any premises from selling, or
advertising the sale of, vaping equipment.

“The Medical & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is the competent authority.

“Underage sale should be raised with Essex Trading Standards”.

Councillor Nicky Purse stated incorrectly the name of the government agency responsible for regulating vapes. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approve vapes provided they meet the criteria of the European Union's (2014) Tobacco Products Directive. Those naughty council officer bureaucrats didn't check the portfolio holder's answer for accuracy. Can those same bureaucrats amend the minutes and Questions from the public agenda papers. Dear council officer bureaucrats, please amend the council's paperwork to get the full name of the MHRA government agency correct in question 10 on page 7 of the following council document: https://moderngov.harlow.gov.uk/documents/b6334/Questions%20from%20the%20Public%20Youth%20Council%20and%20Councillors%2002nd-Nov-2023%2020.00%20Council.pdf?T=9

I dont believe oil vapes to be a good replacement to stop people from smoking. Nicotine is highly addictive and should be phased out with tobacco products. I for one, surprisingly, agree with Rishi Sunak's plan to phase out tobacco to protect future generations. I am a smoker and its incredibly difficult to give up when you have a number of stresses in life. Vapes need to go too
