North London group plans new Jewish community in Harlow

Faith Matters / Sun 26th Nov 2023 at 05:24am

A GROUP of activists from Stamford Hill is planning to start a new Charedi community in Harlow reports the Jewish Chronicle.

The expanding Charedi population in Hackney and the high cost of housing in inner London have prompted the search for new locations.

Rabbi Asher Gratt, initiator of the Harlow project, said that given its close proximity to Stamford Hill, “I see this as a win-win situation for both communities”.

Why is it that every country that has victims of war want to re-settle in our over populated sinking country, we can't even house our own people so why house others???

This group appear to be ultra orthodox with strong religious views that will require different schooling attitudes and no integration with the local communities. They are against same sex relationships. Do we really want more divisions in our community. We already have people shouting their often offensive religious views in the town centre. At what point will this stop. This is a very bad move for our community and should be blocked. Their values do not align with the majority of Harlow residents.

characterized by their strict adherence to halakha (Jewish law) and traditions, in opposition to modern values and practices.

Having met many orthodox Jews from the Tottenham and Stamford Hill area (and other places) I will be firmly welcoming any and all into Harlow. My experience is that they are polite, peaceful and law-abiding. In what way does this "not align with the majority of Harlow residents"? Having people with a strong sense of community, hard-working, self-reliance and a strong set of moral values will be a positive addition to the diversity of Harlow.

A whole community ? We're not talking one or two households, we're talking a community. Where will it be ? how big will it be ? The majority of Harlow are not ultra orthodox Jews so that speaks for itself. We cannot support the people here already, where are they planning to actually live ? We don't have the housing. If you can't see that adding yet another different community to an area already at breaking point is an issue then you live in cloud cuckoo land

I wonder why this has appeared now as this is very old news - and dates back to an article in the Jewish Chronical in July 2016. Reportedly at the time the Charedi community were also looking at Hemel Hempstead, Westcliff and East Tilbury. I suggest a bit more research to substantiate the current facts is required. see link https://www.pressreader.com/uk/the-jewish-chronicle/20160715/281848642941854

Then this needs to be removed as it's misinformation and just causing worry. There is another article with no date saying the same thing. People are already on edge about the overpopulation crisis in Harlow

I am looking forward to welcoming them with open arms. Anyone with a different attitude ought to leave this country, as England is a multicultural and diverse land, where everyone is welcome! The more, the merrier, in my opinion.

I'm worried like many others about our facilities, we can not cope now. We carnt get a dentist appointment, our doctors, and hospital s can not cope now.. no foresight with theses councils.. Is our council going to start buying private new unaffordable housing for them, if so our own should come first...Which all most 6,000 waiting on Harlow s list...

You do Gooders make me sick, your missing the point, where are they going to be housed??? Just last week harlow council make a statement that they was looking into how the housing was allocated, Harlow homes for harlow people and you had to live on the town for certain period of time to qualify.

Kim O'Connor, where does it say or even suggest that Harlow Council is going to buy houses on the open market for this particular group or any other for that matter. Pure fantasy on your part. Would probably be illegal anyway.

At the moment Harlow is a melting pot of different cultures and languages. This sect of Judaism will expect a close knit community with their own security and ambulances. The Orthodox Jews do not integrate or share with the general community. Their laws are antiquated and oppressive. Whereas I actually admire their culture, a Jewish only area anywhere isn't productive.

I have family in Canvey Island, they are consuming Canvey at a rapid rate, buying up everything, they are very rude and will not socialise with anyone outside of their community, not welcome there.

Yes this country us multicultural, yes we should accept others, but not when those others dont want to follow our base culture, we accept lgbt, we accept peoples religious rights (as long as they dont harm others) but this sect of jews are heavily against lgbt and against other religions, allowing them to settle in harlow will increase hate crime as they will attack others and then those others will retaliate. If they are willing to settle and follow our cultural acceptance and belief then by all means go for it, but we all know they will not be willing to do that.

I’d rather have the Jews here than a few others who carry a weird judgmental vibe. At least the Jews have a good sense of humour . I like them, they don’t force their beliefs on others . I was once said I was dirty because I’m not Muslim. This happened in a shop up the town and he said it to his co worker right in front of me- sorry, I don’t cover my head mate, I would hope I don’t have to and men can control themselves if my head isn’t covered. Do you get off on hairstyles or something? . You need to take a look at the men , not the women not covering themselves- you don’t get this from Jews. I definitely welcome the Jews, they keep themselves to themselves, not like the Eastern Europeans who drink in the underpaths and the weird blokes from I dunno Albania, who walk around in packs intimidating women and don’t get me started at all the weird men from other countries just loitering around the water gardens. I’d much rather the Jews here. They keep out of trouble .

These comments are worrying. I bet some of you have never met ultra orthodox Jews in your life but are so quick to judge them. Yeah they have different beliefs and laws but their values are more closely related to ours than these disgusting degenerate values. The only problem I see is like that which others have stated like not enough homes already and an already struggling local health service and education system.

@David You're the nobody. Get a life yourself.

Harlow is a cesspit

Why are you white chavs crying? Harlow is an absolute s*ithole because of white chavs and black roadmen. Orthodox Jews cause no problems. Oh and if they want their own separate education, it's for a reason. Why should they be put in with the chaff whose parents don't even look after them and spend all their time getting into arguments online?

Scott, how do you define our base culture. Is it our class system and priviliged monarchy, is it our colonialism which still controls Northern Ireland, is it our justice system which allows Bernie Eccelstone to avoid jail despite the attempted fraud on HMRC to the tine of c650million pounds?

Having been Employed by a Orthodox jewish school in Stamford Hil for a number of years.Harlow has nothing to worry about..They did a couple o years ago purchase Market House on the market square which i believe they have sold on the offices were striped out to turn them into housing this has Not happened .They will set up their own schools financed largely by The jewish community .The jewish men dont work the spend time studying. What will happen is they will ask a lot of the local council and keep pushing for what they want and need to practice their religion

As a Muslim, I welcome them we need more good religious people in our community. Way better than London rejects that have been dumped here the past few years and way way better than the local kids wielding knives acting “gangsters”

I lived in Stamford Hill for many years. Whilst I was there, nobody was stabbed, burgled, assaulted, robbed, mugged, raped, or had their car broken into or stolen by an orthodox Jew. I need say no more.
