Harlow named as hotspot for Fire Service experiencing difficulty getting vehicle through

News / Thu 21st Dec 2023 at 07:24am

ESSEX County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is urging motorists to take extra care when parking their vehicles, so they do not prevent fire engines from attending potentially life-threatening emergencies.

Over the last few months, the Service has experienced delays in travelling to incidents due to poor parking blocking vital access routes for fire engines.

Colchester, Harlow and Southend are some of the areas that have been flagged as hotspots for people parking their vehicles poorly.

Station Manager Nick Singleton said: “The safety of our communities is our top priority, and it is important that people understand the direct impact their parking choices can have on our ability to respond to incidents rapidly.

“Every second counts in an emergency, and blocking access routes can lead to potentially life-threatening delays.

“We’re asking everyone to check their surroundings before they leave their vehicle. Think – are you parked on a narrow road where emergency access is crucial or are you blocking a fire hydrant. If the answer is yes, then you need to move your vehicle.”

The average fire engine is 2.6 metres (nine feet) wide and 8 metres (26 feet) long – when you park your vehicle in a narrow street, always check you have left enough room for a fire engine to get past.

By parking sensibly, you play a vital role in supporting the Services mission to protect our communities in Essex.

People are already blocking footpaths with their vehicles. Commercial vehicles should be banned from parking in residential areas. Cars have got too big, why do people need 4x4 vehicles. Too many vehicles per household for the parking available. It's becoming incredibly difficult to walk anywhere with the amount if vehicles parked on pavements. It's a massive issue

Until the Councils stop parking on pavements, which restricts the width of roads, we will not solve this. Plus, people do not park considerately. It is often difficult to get past with a wheelchair, so a fire engine has no chance. Perhaps people should also use garages for cars- not rubbish

Mass population increase, so more cars on the roads and not enough parking on the streets. You can blame the government and councils for this. Population of Harlow has increased 10,000 in roughly 10 years

I've been complaining about this for a few years now, I live in one of our tower blocks, and I can only see another grenfel tower situation but all my complaints fall on deaf ears, the police have the power to stop this, we have commercial vehicles ruining the grass areas, vehicles parked dangerously at main junctions, ( phoenix pub rounderbout) its become like the wild west, people just don't care about others, delivery drivers just block the road and drive all over the pavement, but when you ask for help the police and council blame each other for dealing with it, it's clear in the highway code 244, not to do it but there just not bothered, if it's not financially worth doing something then stuff all who suffer

I complained to my councillor about the ridiculous parking in our street, it’s a Harlow wide problem, came the reply. It’s a Harlow wide problem because you’re doing nothing about it. See you next Tuesday sunshine.

Parking in Harlows residential areas is very difficult many of Harlows back roads are very narrow if cars parked both sides it would be very stressful driving down what is left of the available road, this is why drivers find they are forced to mount the pavements. This in itself causes problems for people like myself on mobility scooters or mums with push chairs etc. Garage rents are ridiculously high and not helped by the council demolishing them, there are no secure parking areas in town where several cars could be parked off the road.Harlow was never designedfor the amount of traffic we have now and building large housing areas also increases more traffic.

The reason the garages are so expensive is so people won't rent then and then the council will say people don't want them so they fall into disrepair, that then gives them an excuse to knock them down and put flats there in there place, for a small back hander from the builder, which then creates more cars ,bad management by all councillors labour and tory

It's about time harlow police dealt with illegal parking on street corners footpaths also blocking fire hydrants by parking over them and not just drive past and ignoring the issues. Harlow council also needs to get there act together and start using enforcement companies to deal with the illegal parking issues around the town this will soon be resolved plus Paul Austin harlow police station officer needs to get officers to deal with the parking issues around the town

Essex police Paul Austin Station officer It's about time Harlow police officers dealt with issues with regards to illegal parking around the town parking on street corners public footpaths making it impossible for disabled people and mothers with young children to walk on the paths and having to go into the road to get past and not just driving past and ignoring the issues or saying it's not up to the police to deal with but the council then the council say its down to the police to deal with so ESSEX POLICE OR HARLOW COUNCIL will not take responsibility so no win situation

Will the council or Robert Halforn do something about this now or leave it like the rest of the issues in town like SFG?!?!?!

Most modern cars don't fit in the garages . If parking of commercial vehicles in residential areas was prohibited that would help.

Blame Harlow council planning department for continually letting new estates be built, with not enough provision made for parking!!

Harlow is a joke white van man is parked on every bend, other cars are completely parking on pavements. It's hopeless reporting both council and police say its their responsibility . The only way to stop this is to fine people who parking irresponsibly . Get a third party company to go round all areas and just put parking tickets on the cars with a % going to the company that issues tickets. So guess that would be policed enthusiastically lol. That and only that will put a stop to it.

All hell is going to break loose here in Harlow. The town is so overpopulated now with everyone from everywhere and people are even starting to use cyclepaths for their own parking spaces on the school run. What an absolute disgrace.Drivers are parking on pavements, they are parking on beautiful green spaces and churning the fields into mud pits and now on the school run for the Downs school they are parking on the cyclepaths. What a f****** disgrace. Why do people think are so entitled these days.

Most days I have to do a detour to get just across the road. I have to navigate with cars, trucks, 4 x 4 vans as they all park 2 wheels up on the pavement's don't give enough room to get past with my mobility scooter & my dog he has to follow through from behind, breath in or jump on scooter. Yet he's so tiny. They park across dropped curbs on corners on side of greens....it really does annoy me as it's almost like they don't want to walk any further than they have to....the nearer they can get their cars to front door is how it seems they don't care even if they block you in....they also park in disabled bays without having a blue badge ....there is no thought for anyone & if you say anything they come out with the line "I've lived hear since the houses have been built" let me tell you , you may own your house & garden but that's as far as it goes.....they have no more privileges than someone who has just moved in. So what is it about cars & their owners!! I also do not think these vans should be allowed to park inside residential car parks as they block the light from your windows as well as the view of other people parking, it should not be aloud & there are a few around here.....again they think they can dominate the parking. When you complain to the police it's not their problem they pass it on to the council....the council pass it on to Essex county council & so it just keeps going backwards & forwards passing the buck.....it really does need sorting & for someone to take responsibility, namely every one who has a car who drives & for them to take a moment & think of others & not me me me!! The cars, vans etc are taking over the pavements & every place they can to park their vehicles.. too many cars to one household yet have a tiny house with no parking facilities!! REALLY. These problems make it hard for Fire brigade, ambulances & any other medical & life threatening possibilities & I'm sure that if it was happening to each one of us in those situations we would really be angry.....so take time to think it could save a life & also your vehicles to have some common sense.

Moaning won’t help, everyone needs somewhere to park their car. Some free parking would be nice in Harlow. Problem solved.

People need somewhere to walk as well . Maybe everyone should just walk in the road and hold up the traffic.

I had a dream last night that we had a free public transport system and several free large multi-storey car parks dotted around town. To help deal with the traffic and all new builds had to have parking for at least 3 cars and the planning regulations were changed so that garages could be made bigger than 2 meters by 5 meters.

This is for the idiot who is just wakeing up!!! What sort of answer and or opinion is that. Think your still in land cuckoo. Yes everyone needs to park but not the way they do & I expect with your answer to it you are one of those people!!! who park anywhere you feel fit & obviously don't want to put your hand in your pocket to pay either....go back to cuckoo land...not everything is free in this life but I bet you try & push it!!?? Idiot.
