What a turnaround – Edinburgh Way roundabout transformation completed

Harlow Council / Fri 22nd Dec 2023 at 05:51am

HARLOW Council has completed works to transform the previously overgrown roundabout on Edinburgh Way near the Queensgate Retail Park.

This project is one of many the council has completed this year as part of its priority to restore pride in Harlow.

The works were carried out overnight to minimum disruption to road users.

Following the works Essex County Council have been asked to replace the broken and missing signs on the roundabout.

Councillor Nicky Purse, cabinet portfolio holder for sustainability and environment, said: “The works have really transformed this roundabout which was previously full of overgrown bushes, shrubs and some of the trees had become dangerous.  The roundabout has been completely cleared with a new low-maintenance landscaping scheme introduced, which has also improved visibility for motorists. This roundabout is one of the busiest and hardest roundabouts in the town to navigate.

“This year we have worked hard to restore pride in Harlow, and we will continue that work next year, and we will be making upgrades to other roundabouts in the town.

“From improving the look of roundabouts, to replacing streets signs, to cleaning the streets better, to cutting the grass more regularly, we will do what we can to put the heart back into Harlow.”

I liked the bushes and the trees, another pocket sized nature reserve lost.

About time you sort the traffic issue out there next.

It looks like the Sahara Desert on a roundabout, Council kills 99.99% of germs.. no living thing left. Lesson : regular maintenance!

They want to speak to their colleagues at Essex Council to fix all the potholes in the roads if the think a few road alterations will restore pride in our town. Pothole town!

A bit more green destroyed in the mistaken belief that the ability to see across the opposite side will make things safer. What it will do is encourage drivers to go faster and take chances wherea the main function of a roundabout is to moderate the speed of vehicles to enable cars from different directions can filter in. The problem with this roundabout is bad highway design, the entrance to the Queensgate shopping centre is in the wrong place.

I think it's great. Much safer now that you can see all the traffic coming round the roundabout

I agree I preferred the greenery so far this council seems to be anti environment if you notice the amount of trees ,bushes and greenery that they are destroying would be better to maintain what there is instead of wasting money and time on half hearted projects .market square for example they partially refurbished the square then promptly allowed a food truck to block the footpath

Dangerous place to try and cross..... A bridge would be a great idea.

Save the A414

Meanwhile the A414 near the M11 is like the grand canyon and has been like this for years, why is nothing ever done about this shocking bit of road.

It might be safer, but it’s hideous. Where’s even the littlest bit of nature? Looks like it’s had a drought.

Thank heavens it’s done, it was extremely dangerous, couldn’t see from here to high water, agree with a few comments it looks a bit drab now, as a member of the LBGTQ2spirit+community , would people be against our flag being put on the poll, add a bit of flavour to the roundabout, and show support for us ? Great work HTS (never thought I’d say that) 😅

As I have said before, looks terrible. Surely just a tidy up and leave the trees there would have been better. And if anyone thinks traffic lights would be better is mad. Would just slow traffic down even further in this grid locked town. Might be a nice idea for the council to tidy up the cycle tracks of rubbish. Also, Station Road, the rubbish walking to the station is shocking and never seen anyone there getting rid of it.

its about time something was done so sort out the ugliest roundabout ever, i'm all for green spaces but Harlow has a great amount of grassy areas and trees. this has really improved the look and made it safer to navigate

Come on everyone, it's just a bloody roundabout.

Great, just stop selling off hundreds of new built flats that could have helped Harlow people to a London council for their homeless to live in, even more people to overburden our local NHS

Well yes! We can all see now that the council have 'tidied' the roundabout. More like shaun it. There were no 'dangerous' trees, just lots of vegetation that had been planted and basically ignored from the get go. They had one bloody job to do, tidy the roundabout NOT decimate the damned thing so that it looks like the Sahara. Other than cutting the grass is there anybody at HTS that has knowledge of how to cut back overgrown vegetation while keeping the plants tidy to see another day, I doubt it.

It’s a combination of things that get you riled up.. for me, 1, Car park in Potter St in place of nature.. Councillor Stacy Seales demoted for her right of freedom of speech on a whim by you know who.. and now this.

2023-12-22 14:17:01

Like I get it. It is easier to see traffic and that's nice and all... but I would have preferred to at least keep just one tree, or plant some daffodils or tulips there or something rather than this soulless design.

Still got the same morons that don’t know that their indicators are to help other road users know of their intentions, ie taking the first exit.

Well roads built in the 70s can't cope with traffic for the millennium now with influx of immigration and London councils buying up property to relieve there housing problems harlow will never cope

Marc Howe
2023-12-22 15:29:50

My god bet you lot moaning are the same people that moaded they couldn't see that it's safe to pull out Well if you got out of your cars and walked up to the town centre you'd see that lots more trees have been planted near Asda Back to the round about, as a pedestrian it's a lot safer to cross now you can see, lot safer to pull out for the drivers that's it

Just like Harlow council. Spending money where it's not needed and taking the easy way out. But rather then do needles stuff try doing something that needs to be done IE pot holes in the road. Sorting out the town centre ( I have been to war torn country's that are in a better state) play parks for young one. I could go on and on. But as a lot of people have said one more green space gone and it's such a shame.

Looks dreadful and will not help the traffic situation at all. Its like a race track down there at times. Why couldn"t the existing shrubbery have been properly pruned? Restoring pride or wasting money???

It's interesting how many arm chair politicians think they know how the council could be doing better things. It's a terrible shame more of you don't put yourself forward for election as councillors. With all your combined wisdom we will be living in a perfect utopia in no time.

If you’re looking at the other side of a modern roundabout when you’re entering, you’re driving unsafely. Drivers entering a modern roundabout should first look for pedestrians, then watch for other motorists approaching their entry, and then watch for pedestrians when exiting. The motorist on the other side of the circle won’t get to you for 5 or ten seconds (watch a clock/your phone’s stopwatch to see how long that is). Obscured views across the central island is one of the safety features that helps keep speeds near the optimum 15-20 mph (30 kph) and helps insure drivers recognize there is something in the usual path to slow for and go around. Objects in the circle draw attention to it and help people recognize the need to slow down.

I did loved it previous look way more than now. Didn't see any danger issues before. Now only dry poor peace of land. What a lazy decision.

Looks better but sadly unfinished as it would look better if the black arrows on the concrete facia that goes around the structure were washed as well! This area is a complete no go area most days as some bright spark in the council or highways cannot see that where there is parking right outside B&M this causes the bottle neck on this roundabout and surrounding roads! because the disabled spots are located there as well and if you watch on a typical day the amount of time it takes for someone to park in their chosen spot there holds the whole network up further back its a complete joke of a layout and if you think its bad now wait until Gilston is done and the new fast track A414

Wouldn't of needed such extensive work if it was only maintained in the first place

Barry Sampson
2023-12-22 19:48:06

The carparking outside Lidl and B and M is totally inadequate and poorly laid out . If the disabled bays were angled so it would be easier to park and the carpark linked to the Dunelm carpark which is underused it would take the pressure off and give people some exercise . There are already people parking in Toolstation's carpark and walking over the road . An attendant is needed too at busy times . The basic problem in Harlow is 60 year old infrastructure for too many people and cars.

Still an utterly ridiculous roundabout. Proper realignment or traffic lights need to be put in place.

It's a roundabout to manage traffic, and we can now see round it. It's much better so we'll done to the Council. ....But let's still have a moan up about 'green spaces' from the Thunberg Disciples, and let's put a "look at me" flag on it for the rainbow chasers. LOL 😂

WELL DONE HARLOW COUNCIL - THE ROUDABOUT WAS WAY TO SMALL FOR THE LARGE TREES, YOU COULD NOT SEE ROUND THE CORNER TO GET ONTO ROUNDABOUT SAFELY IF TURNING FROM TIM HORTONS TO TOBY CARVERY - NOW YOU CAN SEE ALL TRAFFIC ON ROUNDABOUT AND IT LOOKS CLEAN AND TIDY AND MODERN - THERE IS SO MUCH GREEN SPACES IN HARLOW, WE DONT NEED MASSIVE TREES ON ROUNDABOUTS THAT CAN CAUSE A DANGER TO ROAD USERS - - WELL DONE!!! NOW NEED TO GO THROUGH ALL HARLOW MAIN ROADS AND CUT BACK OVER RUN BUSHES AND TREES COVERING PATHS.
